West Washington Celebrates Basketball Homecoming
January 28, 2025
The Homecoming celebration took place on January 24th. Basketball player Kree Zink was crowned King and Emma Schmidt was crowned Queen.
The Senators played on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, they played Mitchell, and the final score was 60-55, with Mitchell taking the win. On Saturday, Perry Central won in a close matchup, and the final score was 45-43.
The team has stayed busy with games in back-to-back days. “Playing back-to-back can be tough, especially against conference opponents both nights. I thought our kids played very hard and focused for the majority of both games. We are starting to play our best basketball at the right time and we have to continue to keep improving day by day and game by game,” head coach Ashton Minton said.
Many athletes play on both the J.V. and the Varsity teams. “Splitting quarters can sometimes be tough but the kids understand that playing the maximum amount of quarters is huge for us. It allows different kids to play different roles in both games. Not only does it allow them to play more, but it also gives them confidence rolling over from one game to the next. I think it is an important piece for our program to maximize quarters so each kid has the ability to reach their potential in the future,” Minton said.
Following many close games the team is looking at what they are doing well and what they can improve on for the rest of the season. “We are playing really well in stretches and competing in every game. We are right there, we just have to continue improving each day. In the last 3-4 games we are taking care of the ball averaging under 10 turnovers a game which is huge for us. Also, we have been rebounding a high percentage of shots both offensively and defensively. We have to continue doing these things,” Minton said.
On January 30th WW will travel to Lanesville. J.V. will start at 6 p.m. “Playing at Lanesville is always tough. It is a tough place to play. Their kids play hard and physical the entire game. We have to come out and be the more physical team from the start. They have a couple really nice players, very long and athletic. It will be a big road test for us and also a sectional opponent as well,” Minton said.
January 31st WW will play against North Harrison. “North Harrison is coming off two big wins last weekend and winning three of their last four so they will have a lot of momentum rolling in on Friday night. We have to do a good job of controlling the tempo and getting the shots we want every possession. Defensively we have to continue being physical and rebounding the ball. We have done a pretty good job of this recently, and if we want to have a good week we have to keep that up,” Minton said.
The North Harrison game will be at home. J.V. will start at 6 p.m. with Varsity to follow.
