The Salem Community Schools Board held a special meeting on Thursday, Jan.18. The agenda included Facilities Planning and Recommendations for Facilities Projects.
First up for discussion were improvements to the football field. This includes the installation of artificial turf, creating more versatile uses for the field. Sighted were use by the soccer team and marching band invitationals. Invitationals previously had to be cancelled.
The new turf will have a pad underneath making it safer. Many major schools have this type of turf. Going to this type of field was justified by less maintenance, possible less injuries and better use of the field.
The contract was awarded to Hellis at $1,471,413 from four bids submissions. One of two audience members present questioned the expense, safety and financial responsibility of the expenditure.
All seven-board member voted to accept the project.
Next up for discussion was the replacement of the press box at the football field. The discussion went smoothly, and $481,000 was awarded to Dant Clayton Corporation. Justification on this project was based on stability and safety of the present structure. Again, the board voted unanimously for this improvement.
An executive session was scheduled immediately following the special meeting.
The next board meeting will be Monday, Feb. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at 500 N. Harrison St., Salem.
