  3. What is it like to Attend High School 5,000 Miles from Home?
SHS Junior Theresa Mueller.

By Presley Marcum, SHS Student Writer

What would it be like to experience life at another high school? Even one in a different country? Junior Theresa Mueller has been given the opportunity to be a foreign exchange student at Salem High School. She is from Northern Germany; a town called Lubeck. Her favorite thing about Germany is that it is where her family and friends are, but she came to the U.S. to experience American life.

“It's been really great,” she said. “Everything is new, so I’m still getting used to it.”

Since coming here, she’s learned how kind people are and said one person in particular has made an impact on her the most: a boy in two of her classes.

“He told me, ‘no one should be alone. In general, nobody should be alone,’” she said.

Theresa has enjoyed all of her classes, without being able to pick a favorite. She likes the different class schedule she’s able to have at SHS compared to her school in Germany.

“You get to pick a different schedule here, in Germany you get 13 classes and only get to pick one of them,” she said.

Her family had chosen for her to attend SHS. Theresa wished that she had not worried so much and was surprised at the amount of kind and helpful people that she has met so far. She has enjoyed her time in the U.S. and advises any other students thinking of being an exchange student to just do it.

“Say yes to everything because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” she said.
