  3. Houchin Introduces Think Differently About Education Act

By Parker Armstrong, Press Secretary for Congresswoman Houchin

Congresswoman Erin Houchin (IN-09) and Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-05) introduced the Think Differently About Education Act, a bipartisan bill ensuring parents of children with disabilities are fully informed of their rights in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.

Under current law, parents already have the right to bring third-party advocates, such as therapists, lawyers, or knowledgeable family members, to IEP meetings. However, many parents are unaware of this right. This legislation requires local educational agencies to formally notify parents.

"Parents are their child’s strongest advocates, and they deserve to have all the tools necessary to ensure their child receives the best education possible," said Congresswoman Houchin. "This bill provides clarity and transparency for families navigating the special education process. No parent should be left in the dark."

The Think Differently About Education Act builds on efforts from the last Congress when a similar bill passed the House. This legislation strengthens parental rights and enhances transparency, ensuring families have the support they need to advocate for their child’s education.
