DETAILS:
At approximately 3:21 pm on Saturday, October 12, a single vehicle accident occurred on East State Road 60 near the intersection of Voyles Road. Witnesses on scene stated that there were several vehicles traveling west on State Road 60 when a pickup truck attempted to pass multiple vehicles at the same time. There was oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane and the truck attempted to merge back into the westbound lane between 2 vehicles. As the truck began to merge, Joseph Harper Sr. (52 years old of Pekin) and his wife Tonya Harper (51 years old of Pekin) were forced off the roadway in their 2016 Toyota Highlander. Their vehicle left the roadway and then overturned before coming to a stop.
The driver of the pickup truck left the scene without stopping.
Joseph and Tonya were transported to Baptist Health Floyd by the Washington County Ambulance Service for treatment of injuries not believed to be life threatening.
The Washington County Republican Party will be hosting a "Meet and Greet The Candidates" on Thursday, Oct. 17, 6-8 p.m., at H & R Bakery. The bakery is located on the northeast side of the Salem Public Square.
Voters will have the opportunity to meet with the local Republican candidates and discuss issues that are close to the hearts of community members.

As we approach the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, we know we will hear the ringing bell of the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army raises funds to help those in need with their Red Kettle collections.
The Red Kettle fundraising campaign will begin Saturday, Nov. 27, and run through Tuesday, Dec. 24.
The bell ringing hours are Friday – Saturday 10 a.m.—6 p.m. and Mondays -Thursdays 4-8 p.m. There are no Sunday shifts.
Ringers can be individuals, organizations, families, churches, school groups, 4-H groups or scout groups. To join in, please call Meredith Peters at 812-620-5835 as early as possible.
This year, as in years past, the red kettle will be set up at both doors at the Salem Walmart.
