Steven Joseph Davisson

Steven Joseph Davisson, 63, Salem, died Sunday, Sept. 19, 2021, at his home.

He was born Nov. 27, 1957, in Scottsburg, to Theodore and Norma (Barton) Davisson.

On Nov. 2, 1984, he married Michelle (Mathews) Davisson.

Steve was president of the Scottsburg Senior High School Class of 1976. He earned both a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy and a master of science degree in cytogenetic toxicology from Purdue University and in 1981, started a 40-year career as a licensed pharmacist. In 2015, following the closure of the independent pharmacy where he worked, Steve chose to continue his commitment to independent pharmacy and service to his community by opening Good Living Pharmacy in Salem.

First elected in 2010, Steve was serving his sixth term as the state representative for House District 73. He was vice chairman of the House Public Health Committee and a founding member of the Indiana Attorney General’s Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force. For his legislative service, Steve was recognized as the Indiana Pharmacists Association's Independent Pharmacist of the Year and received the organization's President's Award of Appreciation. Mental Health America-Indiana named him its Legislator of the Year and awarded him its Heroes of Recovery award, and Indiana Optometry twice named Steve its Legislator of the Year. Steve also received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Governor Eric Holcomb.

Steve was a member and board member of the Salem Church of the Nazarene and a member and past board member of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Indiana Republican Party and the Salem Exchange Club and a proud Boilermaker. He and Michelle volunteered as 4-H leaders for 22 years.

In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include three sons, J. Davisson, Andrew (Kayla) Davisson and Tyler (Lauren Spaulding)Davisson ; two daughters, Chelise (Jon)Horn  and Brooke (David)Martindale; t wo brothers, Timothy Davisson and David (Patti) Davisson; and grandchildren, Kelsie Davisson-Horn, Brooklyn Davisson, Jaden Davisson, Colton Horn, Hunter Davisson, River Davisson and two expected granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Britney Davisson.

A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Salem Church of the Nazarene with Bro. Rick Main officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 1 to 9 p.m. at Hughes-Taylor Funeral Home-Salem Chapel and on Friday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church. Burial to follow in the Davisson Family Cemetery in Salem.

Governor Eric Holcomb has ordered that flags at the Statehouse and in all of the counties in which any part of House District 73 is located be lowered to half staff on Friday from sunrise to sunset. As a result, flags will be lowered throughout Clark, Harrison, Jackson, Lawrence, Orange and Washington Counties.
