Mary Margaret King Burns, age 88, of Salem, passed away on Sunday morning, May the 15th at Meadow View Health and Rehab.   Mary was born on November 3, 1933, to Kenneth and Frances Miller King in Salem.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Salem and grew up in the Fort Hill neighborhood on the family farm.  She was a lifetime member of Fort Hill Church of Christ and was faithful to her Lord. She lived by the Golden Rule of treating others how you would like to be treated.

One of her best days, she recently noted was when she married Roy Burns on March 27, 1951 and resided most of her married life in New Philadelphia.  She was proud of her children, Roy Burns Jr., Susan (Burgess) Calhoun, Sierra (Dennis) Collins, Scott (Teresa) Burns, Shelley (Melvin) Fultz, David Burns, and Steven (fiancée Brittany Leigh) Burns all of Salem and all survive. She is also survived by brothers, Kenneth King and William King.  Mary had 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.  Mary also had many cousins that were like brothers and sisters to her.

Being a mother and raising her children was an important role along with other jobs she had in life.  She loved being with people.  She attended Salem High School.  She was a previous employee of Colglazier’s Orchard, cleaned houses, and was a cleaning lady at St. Vincent Salem Hospital to name a few.  Mary was also a member of the Cecil Grimes Post 41 Auxiliary in Salem.  She was known there as “Mother Mary” and volunteered at the Legion chicken BBQ’s until last year.  She was quick to laugh, talked straightforward and loved by many.

Preceding Mary in death are her husband, parents, sisters, Dorothy June Walton and Carol Lee Chenier, brother, John David King, and granddaughter, Gabrielle Leah Lainhart.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1PM at Fort Hill Church of Christ.  Mary will be laid to rest beside her husband in Crown Hill Cemetery.  Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8PM at Weathers Funeral Home and Friday from 11AM-time of service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to one’s favorite charity or to:  Amedysis Hospice, 305 Quartermaster Court, Jeffersonville, IN  47130.
