Carrol Eugene Mathis, 90, formerly the Mayor of Buddha, died Friday, Feb. 26, 2021, at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Jan. 16, 1931, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Victor E. and Alberta (Myers) Mathis.  

He married Joan Lee Bush April 19, 1952.

Carrol retired from Kaiser Aluminum. He was a 1949 graduate of Tunnelton High School and a member of the Free Methodist Church.  Carrol loved his John Deere tractors.

Carrol was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War and the recipient of two bronze stars.

Survivors include his wife, Joan of Bedford; children, Cathy Jo (John) Root of Salem and Todd Steven (Mary) Mathis of Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren, Lori (Brandon) McIntosh, Jason (Sarah) Mathis, Amanda (Robert) Loy, Amy (Shawyn) Ho, and Rochelle Mathis; great-grandchildren, Adalynn McIntosh, Jaxon McIntosh, Brayden Loy, Ava Loy, Layla Mathis and Sawyer Mathis; and sister, Nancy Bramer of Clarksville.

His parents; son, Brian Eugene Mathis; and siblings, Max Mathis, Howard Mathis, June Hudson, Willa Faris, and Marie Borden preceded him in death.

Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Tunnelton Cemetery with Reverend Fred Barger and Todd Mathis officiating. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Memorial gifts can be made to Tunnelton Cemetery.
