Dr. Mark E. Manship
Dr. Mark E. Manship of Salem, passed away peacefully Saturday, January 11 at Norton's Hospital Brownsboro in Louisville, where he received loving care from their physicians and nursing staff.
Dr. Manship was born June 18, 1950 in New Albany, Indiana, the son of Russell E. Manship and Nadine Walters Strain. He graduated from Paoli High School in 1968, then went on to graduate from Indiana University and Indiana University School of Medicine in 1978. He completed his residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Dr. Manship practiced Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine in several cities throughout central and southern Indiana. He previously served as Coroner of Washington County and held positions on the Salem Community School Board, Salem Public Library Board and Washington County Council. He was a member of Salem (High Street) Church of Christ and the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Manship was a student of the old school and practiced medicine like an art form. He enjoyed telling the story of once being approached by someone who said, "I heard you can diagnose a man just by looking at him." Although he was an extremely brilliant physician and talented diagnostician, he will be most remembered for his compassionate bedside manner. He was an advocate for medical independence and valued the sacred relationship between a patient and their doctor. His gregarious, fun-loving nature made him a light for so many, both professionally and personally, and he will be missed immensely.
Mark is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years: Lynn Crockett Manship. He is also survived by his children: Grant E. Manship of Nashville, Tennessee and Abigail Aleksinas (Marc) of Greenville, South Carolina, two sisters: Ann Newkirk (Russ) and Janie Shelton (Eddie) both of English. He will be especially missed by his three grandchildren: Teddy, Whit and Dagny who lovingly referred to him as 'Doc.'
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11AM at Weathers Funeral Home. Visitation will be Thursday from 3-8PM and Friday from 9AM-time of service. Memorial donations may be made to The Glioblastoma Research Organization or the Musella Foundation for Brain Tumor Research & Information, Inc.
