Cost-share funds available for pasture and hay planting in the South Fork-Blue River Watershed

The South Fork-Blue River Watershed has funds available for cost-share practices including pasture and hay planting. Producers in this watershed can apply for cost-share to reseed marginal pastures or add legumes to existing grass pastures in order to increase pasture or hay production.
Pasture and hay planting can improve or maintain livestock nutrition and/or health or increase hay production throughout the year. Additionally, this practice can reduce soil erosion, improve soil and water quality, and produce feedstock for biofuel or energy production. This practice can also decrease nutrient and sediment runoff from the field.
The South Fork-Blue River Watershed is located in southeastern Washington County with portions of the watershed extending into Harrison, Clark, Floyd, and Scott counties. The South Fork-Blue River Watershed project is grant funded and provides cost-share funding for landowners to apply conservation practices within the watershed area. Cost-share funding is still available through the second implementation phase of the South Fork-Blue River Watershed Project while funds last. Fall planting should be completed between Aug. 1, and Sept. 15. NRCS standards and specifications must be followed. New and previous participants are encouraged to sign up. Funds will be distributed on a first come first serve basis so do not wait to apply.
There are also other livestock grazing conservation practices that are eligible for funding such as Heavy Use Area Protection (HUAPs), watering facilities, and livestock pipelines. To qualify for cost-share funding, the participant must choose an eligible conservation practice to apply on property located in the South Fork-Blue River Watershed. If you are located in Washington County, outside of the watershed, you may be eligible for cost-share through a county-wide Clean Water Indiana grant.
For questions about either of these opportunities, contact the Washington County Soil and Water Conservation District at (812) 883–3006 ext. 3 for more information.
