September 30, 1809 Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison signed a treaty with Native Americans, which opened 3,000,000 acres for settlement. Called the “10:00 Treaty,” the border was determined by a shadow cast by the sun each September 30 at 10:00 a.m.


September 30, 1955 24-year-old actor James Dean from Fairmount, Indiana, is killed in an auto accident in California.


 

October 3, 1862 Pleasant A. Hackleman of Franklin County died at Corinth, Mississippi. He was the only Civil War General from Indiana to be killed in action.


October 4, 1860
U.S. Senator and Former Governor James Whitcomb died while on a visit in New York. On this same date in 1860, Ashbel Willard became the first Indiana Governor to die in office.

 

 

October 5, 1813 William Henry Harrison wins a decisive victory at the Battle of the Thames. Shawnee Chief Tecumseh is killed in the fighting.
