  3. Indiana Leads The Nation In Lottery Wins! A Jackpot State Of Mind

  • Indiana has had the most Powerball winners, with 1,271 wins since 1992, according to data from the Powerball website
  • Missouri and Pennsylvania have the second and third highest number of winners, respectively
  • Mississippi has won the fewest times with just two wins in 32 years

A new study has revealed which states have had the most Powerball lottery wins over the past 32 years, with Indiana placed top.

The research, conducted by iGaming experts at GambleSpot, looked at Powerball draws from 1992 and 2024, to see which states have experienced the most wins and which have won the most money. They also looked at which were the most and least frequently drawn Powerball numbers between October 2015 and April 2024.

Indiana was found to have had the most Powerball wins over the past 32 years, with a total of 1,271 wins and $6,456.86 million in winnings, when taking into account inflation. Winners in Indiana have won the Match 5 1,153 times, Match 5 + Power Play 79 times, and the Powerball jackpot 39 times. Though the Powerball jackpot has been won the fewest number of times, it has generated the most winnings in this state, at $4,046.60 million when accounting for inflation.

Missouri ranks as the state with the second most Powerball wins since 1992, with 1,046 wins and total winnings of $5,375.69 million, adjusted for inflation. Most of their wins came from Match 5, with a total of 992 wins, while just the Powerball jackpot has been won 31 times.

Following in third is Pennsylvania with 918 wins and $4,655.32 million in winnings, after inflation. A total of 19 people have won the Powerball jackpot in this state, which has generated a total of $3,029.17 million, with inflation taken into account.

Minnesota is placed fourth with 851 total wins, while Kentucky follows closely behind in fifth with 825 wins.

Note: From 4 October 2015 the white ball pool increased from 59 to 69, and the Powerball pool decreased from 35 to 26. Therefore, only Powerball draws from 7 October 2015 – 8 April 2024 was used, to find the most and least frequently drawn numbers.

Speaking on the findings, Andriy Nezdropa, CEO of Adwise Partners LLC, the company behind GambleSpot said:

“Analyzing lottery data over a significant period can provide valuable insights into societal and economic dynamics, as well as our fascination with luck and chance.

“People often find lottery statistics fascinating because they reflect public interest in gambling and the allure of hitting it big. Tracking which states have had the most winners can serve as a barometer of this interest over time.

“It can also help to identify statistical anomalies. While lottery draws are supposed to be random, long-term data can reveal if there are any unexpected trends or biases in the distribution of wins.”

Methodology: By using data from the Powerball website and a US inflation calculator, a ranking was made to identify which states have won the lottery the most between 22 April 1992 and 8 April 2024. It also identified which state had the most winning in millions, adjusted for inflation. Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah were not included in the ranking as these states do not participate in the Powerball lottery. Maine and Montana were not included as data could not be gathered for these states.

To calculate the most and least commonly drawn Powerball numbers, draw results were used from 7 October 2015 – 8 April 2024. This was due to there being a different number of balls in the ball pool before this point.
