Unified track meet

Getting a big hug from Angie Kay for a job well done after finishing a race at last Thursday's unified track meet at Paoli is Alleyanna Stovall. The event was put on by the South Central Special Education Co-op. All three schools, Salem, East Washington and West Washington had students participating in the event.

Salem, West Washington and East Washington students were represented at the Unified Track meet held recently in Paoli. Salem teacher Gail Morgan said her process in preparing for the unified track meet usually takes two months, but because of COVID, she had about two weeks.

“I usually choose, for example, a teacher I know who is going to work well with my students, depending on personalities,” Morgan said. “Then they go with that room to PE, music and art and all that stuff. We haven’t done that this year. Because of COVID, we have been keeping our kids safe and staying in our room. The peers that were at this year’s event, were hand-chosen by the administrators, not by me.

“Our kids didn’t know them and in two weeks time, they got to know each other, but they had a great time.” Morgan said Clinton Blankenbaker really helped with the bonding.

Over the years, she has lobbied to get the unified meet to be held in Salem, but since the co-op is headquartered in Paoli, they are reluctant to have it outside of Orange County.

“It ran really smoothly, but Salem always brings the most people,” Morgan said. “I just wanted one time before I retired to be able to have it here at Salem, because I just know the entire elementary school would have come down to watch and cheer us on.”

Morgan will be retiring at the end of the school year. Read more about her in The Salem Leader, May 25 edition.
