NIE program expands to include student writing

Students in Mrs. Spaulding’s journalism class at Salem High School are learning about newspapers and how to write stories for a newspaper.
“I am looking forward to working with the students and using their work in The Salem Leader and The Salem Democrat,” said Lana Hamilton, editor of the newspaper.
The students expressed an interest in writing opinion columns, so View from SHS was started as a place for them to share their views.
During the upcoming weeks, they will also be writing short bios of themselves, so that readers of the newspaper will be able to associate a name to a face.
The class is also participating in the Leader’s Newspaper in Education program, where they receive the newspaper delivered to their classroom twice weekly. “We are currently looking for sponsors for the NIE program that provides nearly 250 newspapers to classrooms at Bradie Shrum and West Washington Elementary School, in addition to Salem High School,” said Hamilton. If you or your business would be interested in sponsoring a NIE subscription, contact Hamilton at or 812-883-3281. Cost is $15 per subscription.
