EHS plans to seek STEM certification in 2022-23

EHS assistant principal Luke Dean and principal Darin Farris are focusing on helping Eastern become STEM certified, but during a recent game they were showing some of their students how to do the limbo.

Eastern High School is working on becoming STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) certified.

Once EHS has its certification, East Washington would be only the third corporation in the state where every school is STEM certified.

“I have a really good team that I have put together,” said EHS principal Darin Farris. “We meet monthly and that will probably change in the coming weeks when we start meeting three times a month.”

Farris said the purpose of the meetings is to see where the school is with STEM and to see what they need to work on to be better.

“I’ve been surprised at some of the things where I wasn’t sure if we’d meet some of the qualifications and we are better than I thought we would be,” he said. “There are some areas where we have to do a better job and do more to get the certification.”

Farris said the plan is to work on those areas throughout the remainder of the 2021-22 school year and then apply for the STEM certification for the 2022-23 school year.

“We are using this as our planning year,” Farris said. “I have some team members who have some very good ideas. I am confident we will become certified.”

The Indiana Department of Education has outlined a lengthy process for a school to become STEM certified. Those steps must be completed in a required amount of time from the time a school first applies for certification.
