Kate Wehlann (pronounced WAY-lin) joined the Leader Publishing staff in February 2012 after graduating from Ball State University in December 2011. A transplant from the Great White North (South Bend), she covers education and other stories and also writes the food blog for salemleader.com.
She knew she wanted to be a writer as a fifth grader, getting her start during every downtime, study hall and recess she could possibly devote to short stories and novels. When it came time to think about college majors, she happened upon journalism and accepted the challenge of learning a new kind of writing, while keeping her fictional work at home.
Around the time she moved to Salem, she became the parent of a bouncing baby miniature schnauzer, who frequently appears in her column, "Just a Small Town Girl" and more often than is probably healthy on her Facebook page. She'd offer her condolences to her friends, but to be honest, she isn't really sorry. He's a cutie pie (aren't you, Baby? Who's a good boy? You're a good boy! Yes, you are!).
She spends her time writing, taking photos, cooking, spending time with church family and friends and singing Broadway, jazz, Disney and an eclectic mix of other genres at the top of her lungs in the car. She doesn't really care if you see her, but if you'd like to join her at intersections, feel free.
