Local wrestlers learn from Ohio state champs

If you want to be the best, you have to learn from the best. That was the thought behind bringing four state champions from Ohio for a three-day wrestling camp at Salem last week.

Oscar Sanchez, Julian Sanchez, James Limongi and Dillon D’emillio have all won at least one state championship and are all seniors. They taught more than 20 kids from fifth grade to high school from both Salem and West Washington during the camp.

Salem’s new varsity wrestling coach Mark Caron said he thought the camp went very great. “I thought went extremely well. I think the kids from Ohio came in with big expectations and I think they met all of them. The kids from Salem and West Washington really did appreciate them coming down and putting on a camp for us.”

Limongi said the camp went very well. “It’s been great. The kids are very coachable. It seems like they are enjoying it and learning a lot. It’s been really awesome.”

Caron said he was familiar with the four from Ohio. “I’ve been following these kids for awhile. I’ve known James since he was in sixth grade, and I got to know the others because I followed him, and I went to the Ohio tournament last year. I was there they won the state tournament as a team, and of course all of them are state champions.” Caron said when he floated the idea of the camp, the four were very receptive.

The camp took place during dead week for football. Caron said he thought it was beneficial for the football players in attendance, noting it promotes better athleticism for both sports.
