It was a great start to the softball season for the Lady Lions. They took advantage of a huge third inning to dispatch New Washington in a wet and cold season opening win, 19-2, over the Mustangs.

The Lady Lions got behind early. A lead-off batter was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a sac fly. But Salem responded in the bottom of the first. Lexi Garloch reached on a bunt, then MacKenzie Underwood gave Salem the lead with a two run shot over center field.

New Washington got runners on second and third with one out. A wild pitch brought home the tying run before Salem could get out of the jam.

Salem responded in the bottom of the second. Zoe Couch was hit by a pitch to get one on. Then Natalie Blevins laid down a bunt to advance Couch, but an error allowed her to come all the way home and score, giving Salem a 3-2 edge.

The third inning is when the wheels fell off for New Washington and Salem took complete control of the game.
