TEN FORMER RACE WINNERS GRACE ENTRY LIST FOR SUNDAY, OCT. 20 HALLOWEEN 200 AT SALEM

Expanded Weekend Format Includes Racing Both Saturday and Sunday 

There’s just not enough space to list all the great reasons to attend the 31st running of the Smoker Friendly Discount Tobacco Halloween 200 at Salem Speedway fueled by the Hoosier Lottery; but we can at least narrow it down to 10. 

And that’s because there are at least 10 former champions returning this year for the 31st running of the “Great American Stock Car Classic” coming Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19-20. 10 former champions that span the history of the Halloween 200 reaching back 30 years ago when Des Moines, Iowa’s Dan Banker wheeled his No. 10 to victory lane in 1990. Banker has already pre-entered this year’s race, as has the defending winner David Bayens from Borden, who tracked down Chuck Barnes, Jr. and Sr. in the end to win a thriller in 2018. 

The father-son duo of Barnes, Sr. & Jr., both of Louisville, are entered as are cousins Will and Frank Kimmel II. Barnes, Sr. is the all-time Halloween 200 winner with seven victories. Barnes, Jr. won it twice 15 years apart, in 2002 and 2017. Kimmel II, of Jeffersonville, was the winner in 2011. Sellersburg’s Will Kimmel, the 2019 Lucas Oil Great American Stock champion at Salem, is still searching for his first Halloween 200 triumph.

Other Halloween 200 victors entered include four-time winner Brett Hudson of Owensboro, Ky, Todd Kempf, Huntingburg, Tony Conway, Louisville, Ky., Phil Jenkins, Greenfield, and Joe Williamson also from Louisville. Williamson, who hasn’t raced at Salem in 10 years, will be the oldest driver to ever compete in the Halloween 200 at 76 years young.

Local Salem favorite Baden Stewart has also filed an entry in a Chuck Barnes, Sr.-owned Chevrolet. Baden, 18, won his first-ever feature event in the Lucas Oil Great American Stock division at Salem in 2018.

In addition to the 200-lap Halloween 200 grand finale Sunday afternoon, the ASCR Ford Crown Vics will be in action on the quarter-mile oval and figure-8 track Saturday afternoon, in addition to Halloween 200 practice, expanding the event a full two days.

The Halloween 200 traditionally starts all the competitors in rows of three. Jeff Chew won the inaugural Halloween 200 in 1989.

The on-track festivities get underway with Halloween 200 practice Saturday morning at noon with Ford Crown Vic racing on the oval and figure-8 track following. Spectator gates open at 9:30 a.m. Sunday with Halloween 200 practice at 10 a.m. The Smoker Friendly Discount Tobacco Halloween 200 is scheduled to get the green flag at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

Advance general admission two-day tickets are just $20 for adults and teens; two-day reserved are $25. For Sunday only, adult general admission tickets are $15, reserved $20. Children 7-12 are $5 Sunday. Advance Saturday only tickets for adults are priced at just $8 each.
