Washington County will have two representatives Saturday at the semi-state cross country meet, and both of them are freshmen. Eastern’s Kaden Temple will run in the boys’ race and Lanie Roberts will represent Salem in the girls’ race.

Although the Musketeers as a team finished in seventh, Temple was able to advance as an individual placing fourth out of the individual qualifiers. He finished 29th overall with a time of 17:21. Eastern Coach Mark Olesh said Temple has had a great season so far. “I’m really proud of Kaden and the entire team for not only a great race at the regional, but overall a great season. Making it to regional and having runners advance to semi-state were team goals set back in August.

“I’m glad for Kaden. As a freshman, he shows so much promise as an Eastern runner. And without any seniors on the team, I’m already looking forward to seeing how the team will compete next year.”

Roberts is also a freshman, competing as an individual on Saturday morning. She finished third as an individual and 23 overall with a time of 20:49. Salem Coach Roger Bundy said he knew she had potential from day one. “It’s exciting to see her make it to the semi-state race. I thought all year she had the potential to make it that far as a freshman and now she has proven that. She ran a little faster than she did at sectional and battled all the way during the 5K. “She should be proud of her effort. I know I am. I think she is ready to run a personal record next week but we will have to wait and see.”

Both Roberts and Temple will compete at the Brown County semi-state race next Saturday. Roberts will race at 11:30 a.m. and Temple will race at 1:30 p.m.
