Traffic stop leads to drug arrest

Indiana State Police

On Friday, Oct. 19, around 10 a.m., Master Trooper Barry Brown was patrolling on SR 56, west of Salem, and initiated a traffic stop on a blue Dodge pickup truck for speeding. The driver, and only occupant of the vehicle, was identified as William Donald Cook of Anderson. Cook told Brown he was headed to Salem to spend the weekend with a friend.

Brown, a member of the Sellersburg Post All Crimes Policing squad, was working in conjunction with members of the Washington County Drug Task Force and Deputy Paul Gikins and his K9 partner, Leny. Gikins arrived a short time after the traffic stop and deployed the K9 which gave a positive alert for the odor of narcotics in the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle by officers revealed more than a pound of suspected processed marijuana which had been packaged in a large vacuum sealed pouch.

Cook was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and was incarcerated at the Washington County Jail.
