It was a crash that Deputy Abby Powers said should’ve resulted in very serious injuries. Call it a Christmas miracle or just plain luck, but somehow Daniel Maudlin, 34, 12261 E. Casey Hollow Rd., escaped virtually without injury after he hit an icy patch and his truck flipped.

The crash was reported at 8:43 a.m. Monday on East Blue River Road. Powers said Maudlin was northbound in a 1999 Toyota Tacoma. As he rounded a curve, near State Road 160, his truck hit any icy patch caused by runoff.

With no weight in the back, it went into a slide and flipped, ending up on its top in a culvert with a drainage pipe in the back of it.

Maudlin was able to get out of the vehicle by himself and refused medical treatment at the scene.

“He got lucky,” said Powers. “It should’ve been a lot worse that it was. He was blessed.”
