It was a rough way to start a Monday.

Zimeng Liu, 23, Bloomington, was on her way to class and said the barricades blocking off the road she was taking from the Austin area to Bloomington Monday morning had been shifted, so she began driving down State Road 256 in Gibson Township in Washington County.

Thanks to the saturated ground and recent rain, the road was flooded and Liu's small, passenger car became stuck in the water. Conservation Officer Nate Berry said the water was about 18 inches and she was around a mile from dry land on either end when he and fellow Officer Blake Everhart went to rescue her with an airboat.

Everhart and Berry are based out of Jackson County and Everhart said getting an airboat out for water rescues and water rescues in general are a very common occurance this time of year. Berry said he and Everhart perform a rescue every two or three days.

"We don't have too many here on 256 or 39 in Washington County because of the barricades," said Berry.

"This is my third time since last Wednesday," said Everhart.

Indiana State Troopers, Washington County Sheriff's Deputies and Gibson Township rescue workers were on scene to help conservation officers.
