Spring break craziness

Spring Break was just crazy this year. And not just at our house. That weather! I mean, really, Mother Nature, really?

On Sunday, we were out in the yard – in T-shirts. It was warm and sunny with a beautiful blue sky overhead. It was the perfect time to get a few chores done. We decided to tear out an old flower bed on the side of the driveway. It was sort of in the way and the mortar between the stones was coming loose. Hays was thrilled because Darin let him use a sledgehammer to break it up.

I pilfered some of the stones that remained intact to make a little wall around an area where I planted some hostas last summer. Maybe now Darin won’t keep mowing over them!

Monday was a little cooler, but still a nice day. We decided to visit the Louisville Zoo. There were very few people there and it’s always nice to get a nice walk in while enjoying the animals.

We’d promised the kids a trip to the movies Tuesday. We headed into Corydon in the late afternoon, just as the snow began to fall. This, as we all know, was the first day of spring. What a way to welcome it. Ugh.

The movie was great. We were the only ones in the theater, which thrilled the kids. (Inexplicably, they chose to sit in the very back row.) We saw “A Wrinkle in Time,” which was just excellent. I really liked the positive messages it reinforced – believe in yourself, embrace your faults instead of beating yourself up over them and know that you can help others and make a difference, even if you’re just a kid.

We came out of the theater around 9:30 and were stunned to see how much snow had fallen. Despite the cold, miserable weather, the kids insisted they had to have ice cream. Following a DQ stop, we headed home.

I told the kids Wednesday will likely be a day they’ll remember for a long, long time. On March 22, they spent hours romping in the 7 or 8 inch snow that blanketed our farm. It was heavy and wet (which meant downed lines; our power was out all night) but it’s the most beautiful snow. Darin and I rode around the farm and I took tons of pictures. The kids jumped in snow on the trampoline and built snowmen before coming in to have hot cocoa.

We just chilled out the rest of the week. It wasn’t exciting, but sometimes those vacations are the most relaxing.

Spring Break 2018 was certainly one for the record books and the memories!
