Peggy Staser Henn

Peggy Staser Henn was born on March 25, 1947 to David and Millicent (Wade) Staser in New Albany, IN. She grew up attending Daisy Hill United Methodist Church and graduated from Eastern High School in 1965.

Peggy loved her childhood in Pekin, Indiana. She was a majorette and enjoyed participating in 4-H projects throughout school. After high school graduation she attended Indiana University and studied Outdoor Education.

At IU she met her husband Gary after being introduced by mutual friends. Peggy and Gary were married on September 1st, 1973. They were able to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary together. After many years of waiting they were blessed with two children, Carrie Elizabeth and Steven Michael.

She was a loving mother: attending swim meets, fundraising for Science Club trips, chaperoning field trips and leading numerous Sunday school classes. Peggy was honest, hardworking, genuine, and loved her friends and family dearly. There was not a job, church group, or community effort that Peggy was involved in where she did not make lifelong friends.

Peggy worked numerous places over the course of her career, including Girls Scouts of Central Indiana, Camp Fire Girls and Grand View University. She always had a passion for empowering young adults and youth through education. She was also a proud member of Altoona United Methodist Church for 22 years. Her faith sustained her and she leaned on it in her final days.

Peggy loved being a wife and a mother, but was overjoyed to become a grandma. She was a wonderful Grammy to Leah and Molly. She was always up for an art project, baking cookies or reading a book. She truly loved being a grandma and she was good at it.

Peggy passed away on September 5, 2018 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines, Iowa after a battle with Ovarian Cancer at the age of 71. Peggy is preceded in death by her father, David Staser; her mother, Millicent Staser; and her brother, Kenny Staser.

Peggy will be terribly missed by her husband, Gary of Altoona; her daughter, Carrie (Spencer) Sponheim of Altoona; her son, Steven (Andy Hird) Henn of Des Moines; her sister, Patti (Ronnie) Hall of Sellersburg, IN; two granddaughters; and her in-laws, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and countless friends.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Girl Scouts of Central Indiana or Heifer International in Peggy’s memory.

Family will greet friends at the Adventureland Inn, 3200 Adventureland Dr, Altoona, IA 50009 on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 5-8 pm for wine and sharing of memories of Peggy. A memorial service will be held at Altoona United Methodist Church, 602 5th Ave SW on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 10 am.
