Marie Joan Corbett

Marie Joan Corbett (Bueter), 87, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, while in Texas.

Joan, as her friends and family called her, was a graduate of Jeffersonville High School. She attended Indiana University Southeast later in life, while working full-time and received her Associates and Bachelor degrees. She worked at the U.S. Census Bureau in Jeffersonville in progressively responsible positions.

Joan was very active in her church, first at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Jeffersonville, and later when she moved to Charlestown and joined St. Michaels Catholic Church. She played the organ at both churches for a total of over 50 years. Joan loved going to church picnics and would often pick up extra dinners for shut-ins.

Joan participated in the Senior Games for many years. She was also a member of the Silver Toner’s, which visited many different nursing homes in the Southern Indiana area where she sang for the residents there.

Joan was a Girl Scout Leader in Southern Indiana and served as a volunteer during Day Camp and also as a Director one summer at the former Camp Honor Bright in Sellersburg.

Joan loved to sew, and she loved to engage in fun outdoor projects with her children. One summer she took on a very large project and sewed many pieces of fabric together that were stretched over some limbs that were cut from a large old elm tree. This became a backyard tee pee for several years and was the location of many sleepovers.

Joan loved animals, especially dogs. Over the years she was blessed with several special dogs including Spot, Mert and Pert, and most recently Koko, who predeceased her by two months.

She is survived by three daughters, Lisa (Danny) Fleming of Pekin, Indiana, Linda Vannatter (Dan) of Charlestown, Indiana, and Laura (Ray) Warner of Texas; Three (3) grandchildren, Amy (Fleming) Gosnell, Pekin, Indiana, Jeff Warner (TX) and Jason Warner (TX). Joan also has two (2) great grandchildren, Glenn Gosnell, III, and Madalynn Gosnell, both of Pekin, Indiana.

She is preceded in death by her husband Gordon Harold Corbett; father Joseph Bueter; mother Clara Bueter and two brothers Graham Bueter and Lawrence Bueter.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 21st, at 11:00 am at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with burial to follow in Eastern Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 20th from 2 pm to 8 pm at E.M Coots’ Sons Funeral Home.
