LaVern Wayne "Vern" Altemeyer

LaVern Wayne "Vern" Altemeyer, 80, of Pensacola Beach, Florida, formerly of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at his Indiana residence near Scottsburg. He was born on March 12, 1938 in Scottsburg, Indiana, the son of the late William Henry Altemeyer and Alta Mace (Winslow) Altemeyer.
Vern graduated from Scottsburg High School in 1956 and then attended Transylvania University for a year. He then transferred to the University of Illinois, where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Business. Vern later earned his Masters Degree in Counseling from IUPUI in Indianapolis, Indiana.
He was married on August 20, 1960 to Barbara (Schwier) Altemeyer, who survives.
Vern retired from Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis, Indiana, after 33 years. While with Eli Lilly, Vern and his wife Barbara, were able to live in numerous cities including Indianapolis, Toronto and Mexico City. After retirement, they lived in Pensacola Beach, Florida.
Vern played on the 1956 Indiana Allstar Basketball team and was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1985. He was also a member of the Zoah Christian Church in Scottsburg, Indiana. Vern was an avid collector of antique clocks, loved John Wayne movies and watching his grandson, Grey, play hockey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lawrence Altemeyer and a sister, Mary Dieterlen. Survivors in addition to his wife, Barbara, include a son, Stuart Wayne Altemeyer, his wife Shelli Altemeyer and grandson, Grey Wayne Altemeyer of Cumming, Georgia.
Funeral Service: 11:00 am Thursday, May 31, 2018 at Zoah Christian Church located at 700 N. Zoah Road in Scottsburg, Indiana, with Rev. James Coratti officiating.
Visitation: 4:30 to 8 pm Wednesday at Collins Funeral Home and after 10 am Thursday at Zoah Christian Church.
Entombment will be in Zoah Cemetery.
