Youth Worker Cafe to focus on substance abuse

According to the 2018 Indiana KIDS COUNT® Data Book, 13.3 percent of Indiana teens ages 14 or older say they use alcohol or drugs to relax, feel better about themselves or fit in; 23.7 percent of Indiana high school students report drinking alcohol in the past month and 37.5 percent say their parents would not catch them if they were drinking.

Substance abuse among youth is a problem across all socio-economical, educational and geographical areas and the face of adolescent substance use is always changing. While experimenting with drugs and alcohol doesn’t always lead to abuse, early use is a risk factor for developing more serious abuse and addiction.

Attend the next Indiana Youth Institute panel discussion to learn more about the issue of youth substance abuse, including current trends as well as impact, prevention and intervention. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the government building on Martinsburg Road. A free lunch will be provided.

Panelists for the event are:

Heather Woloshen, Victim Services Coordinator, Hoosier Hills PACT

Maria Burks, LMHC, Celebrate Recovery

Dottie Clerici, FNP-C, Nurse Practitioner, Lifespring Health Systems, Washington County

Dustin Houchin, Washington County Prosecutor
