Women’s forum – Your Land Your Legacy Conservation Discussion and Field Tour

SALEM, INDIANA--Women who own or manage farmland in Washington and surrounding counties are invited to participate in a free conservation discussion and field tour on Friday, Oct. 19, at the Washington County Community Foundation, 1707 Shelby, Salem, Indiana 47167.

With female landowners at an all-time high in the area, women need opportunities to learn about their land. The goal of these conservation discussions is bring women together with professionals that are available to assist them on their own property. This meeting is intended for female landowners or farm operators, young or old.

This will be the fourth year for this meeting in Washington County. These meetings bring together landowners in an informal learning format for a women-only morning discussion followed by a more in-depth look at the characteristics of conservation of our natural resources. This year the event will focus on cropland landuse. The group will also go to the field in the afternoon and walk down into an open soil pit to learn that what goes on below the surface is as important as what is on top. Women will view several different conservation practices that are common in crop fields. Female conservation professionals will be on hand to answer questions and share resources.

“These meetings in the past have been well-received and filled up quickly,” said Ruth Hackman, District Conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service . “We’re looking forward to bringing this unique educational opportunity to our area again. Women are now playing major roles on farms in Washington County and many times are not aware of the services that are available to them. Attendees are encouraged to bring a female friend or other family members that are part of the family farm operation or co-owners of the property. Please join us in a fun-filled day where knowledge is shared among attendees. Even if your operation is not focused on cropland, you will find the afternoon portion applicable to any open land. It’s not often that you get to view what is below our feet in a field setting with a soil scientist.”

Discussion will focus on “Your Land, Your Legacy” and will include discussion of how to conserve and transfer your legacy to the next generation. The meeting is presented in partnership with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Washington County Community Foundation, Washington County Soil & Water Conservation District and Purdue Extension.

Beth Nicholson, a female landowner and prior class participant, said, “It is always a pleasure to attend the Women’s Forum. Ladies of agriculture gathering to learn about conservation and maintaining the land that we love and want to pass on to future generations. If you have a love for agriculture, meeting new friends, learning from others, great ideas and practices, you need to attend the Women’s Forum.”

A light breakfast and registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the meeting will begin at 9. Lunch will be provided and the program will end with refreshments at 3 p.m. Staff from the sponsoring organizations will be on hand to answer your questions.
