Tomorrow, the town of Pekin will – for the 189th time – host the oldest consecutive Fourth of July celebration in the nation.

It's Pekin's claim to fame and while other towns may have an older celebration, Pekin is the only one who can say they've never missed a Fourth of July celebration.

Over the years, the town has promoted the event with various types of signage.

This photo, from 1988, shows a sign in the background created by local artist Howard Smith, at far right. Also pictured are Don Graves, Andy Newlon (who was master of ceremonies for the 164th Fourth) and John Mustain.

Be sure to head out to Pekin this evening for the baby contest, rides and food. And stay for the fabulous fireworks, starting at 10 p.m.
