Do you remember Memorial Day weekend 15 years ago? On May 27th, a tornado hit Pekin and Salem suffered severe flooding. The storms occurred on Thursday, just before the holiday weekend. On Friday, The Leader produced an "Extra" edition detailing the storm's damage and residents spent the weekend cleaning up.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities or serious injuries, but the storm was the beginning of the end for Child Craft Industries, which had been one of the county's largest employers and a leader in the furniture industry for decades.
