Strengthening Families program to begin Jan. 29

Purdue Extension is once again offering the Strengthening Families program to local residents. This program focuses on family skills taught in group sessions to increase family strengths. It builds on improving family relationships, parenting skills and improving youths’ social and life skills.
Extension Educator Joni Muchler will lead the program. She said this is an extremely effective program and has been named the #1 prevention program out of 6,000 analyzed for long-term effects on substance abuse and misuse by the World Health Organization.
The program will take place on seven Tuesdays, beginning Jan. 29, at Salem Community Church on Beck’s Mill Road. A meal at 5:30 p.m. starts each evening.
It is open to all families with youth between ages 10 and 14. The cost is $10 and free childcare is provided for children age 9 and younger. Each week, participants will earn a ticket toward a prize valued at $100. There are weekly incentives offered as well. Each evening concludes at 8 p.m.
The topics are Love and Limits, House Rules, Encouraging Behavior, Using Consequences, Building Bridges and Protecting Youth.
