Special program covered grain bin safety

Farmers and first responders experienced what it’s like to be trapped in a grain bin during a safety training held last Tuesday. They were surprised at how quickly they sank and became immobilized.

“It’s sort of like being at the beach and getting buried in sand,” explained Dylan Williams. “I couldn’t move or get free.”

It takes just 10 to 15 seconds for a person to become trapped and one can become stuck under the surface in under a minute.

Williams is a member of the Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department and was at the first responder training Tuesday night. A separate session for farmers was held earlier in the day.

Everyone thinks he or she can dig themselves out, attendees learned as they watched a video produced by Posey County, which recreated an actual incident. Almost never is that possible.

It’s also almost always impossible for another person to dig out a trapped person; the grain simply flows back in, replacing each shovelful as soon as it’s tossed.
