Salem housing development gets nod

Plans to construct up to 15 homes at Sparks Ferry Road and Shelby Street have been approved by the Salem Plan Commission.

The approval came after a public hearing held during the Monday, July 23, commission meeting.

The plans were presented by Ken Temple, as a representative and shareholder in Future Development, the investment group behind the Sparks Ferry Hills Subdivision.

Although the development is in the county, it is within the two-mile fringe area around Salem, making it subject to city review.

Temple said the development would include six houses on Shelby Street and at least eight along Sparks Ferry. Although the plans include a ninth house, the lay of the land may not make it buildable.

All lots would be one acre and would have city water and sewer. Buyers would agree to restrictive covenants.

City water has already been extended to the area, but the sewer line will have to be installed. Temple said options for the extension are being considered.

Plan Commission Member Trent Nichols suggested that the development might offer the city the opportunity to annex the ground involved so the walking trail could be extended to the area.
