Pekin cleans up

The push by New Pekin employees and council members to clean up the town got off to a booming start last Saturday, Aug. 1.

The town rented a dumpster for residents to use for trash and also made arrangements with a company to collect old tires.

Town Manager Jaden Stone said he considered the clean up day a huge success.

“We collected several hundred tires and the dumpster was completely full at the end of the day,” he said. “I was shocked by the number of tires we collected.”

New Pekin Clerk-Treasurer Sherry Clem said not only did the clean up day help the town improve visually, but with so many used tires out of circulation, the clean-up day also helped improve the environment.

“We collected a lot of tires that could be floating down the river or sitting around for mosquitoes to collect in,” she said.

The town’s push to get clean extends beyond the clean-up day. There are a number of ordinances being crafted, like a worn down and abandoned building ordinance, as well as a weed ordinance. Both are designed to encourage property owners to keep their property visually appealing.

The town has also planned a number of main roads to be paved in the coming months thanks to a Community Crossings Grant through the Indiana Department of Transportation.

With everything being done, the goal is improvement. That’s something Clem said the clean-up day accomplished

“The community is better now than it was yesterday,” she said.

The town council’s next meeting will be Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2020 at 7 p.m. in the shelter house located at the Pekin Park.
