National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is coming up this weekend

This weekend, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) offers citizens a chance to get rid of pills, cough syrup, and other unwanted medications that have been piling up around their homes. The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26.  This event is one of the few days of the year where citizens can drop off expired or unused prescription medications without having to wonder whether they will be accepted. This program WILL NOT ACCEPT NEW OR USED NEEDLES. The collection is intended for liquid and pill medications only.

Citizens wishing to participate in this program may drop off their prescription drugs for disposal at any Indiana State Police Post throughout the state (except the Toll Road). This includes the Sellersburg Post on Saturday, Oct. 26, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. located at 8014 CR 311, Sellersburg, Indiana, 47172.

It is unsafe to keep expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs in your house. Flushing drugs down the sink or toilet is potentially very harmful to water treatment facilities. This is an opportunity to properly dispose of prescription drugs with no questions asked.

Locally, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department is joining forces with the Salem City Police Department to participate in the Take-Back Day, that same day from noon to 3 p.m. The collection site is the Justice Center Parking Lot, at 801 Jackson Street, in Salem.

Sheriff Brent Miller, Salem City Assistant Chief Tim Miller and Deputy Matt Hein will be waiting in the Justice Center parking lot for citizens to drive through the parking lot and drop off unused or expired prescription medications, rain or shine.
