Local educator pens children's book

Savannah Hartsfield has always enjoyed writing poetry. Coupled with her previous position with Salem Community Schools teaching kindergarten, an age group where rhyming books are popular, and her ongoing position of parent to young girls, the leap to children’s author wasn’t a big one.

“I’ve liked writing poems since the fifth grade,” said Hartsfield. “My mom encouraged me to write a children’s book.”

The idea for her debut story, “Where is Bear?” came from needing a way to teach the concept of hibernation to her young students. The book is dedicated to her students.

“There aren’t a lot of books about hibernation kids really want to read,” she said. “I needed a book to go with our hibernation theme and thought, you know what? I’ll just write one myself."

“Where Is Bear?” can be found online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and from her publisher, AuthorHouse, for $20.99 (she sees more of her profits from sales from AuthorHouse). You can also find it locally at Cheddar Depot, Lincks Clothing and Shoes, 3 Stories Trading Company, The Salem Apothecary and El Camino’s Mexican Restaurant. Of course, you can also contact Hartsfield herself for a copy for $24.99.

Hartsfield said she’s planning some signings in May. She will be at Cheddar Depot at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, and she will be at Friday Night on the Square, May 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

“We’ve had a good reception,” said Hartsfield. “I’ve heard nothing but good things about the story and people love the illustrations!”
