Hemp farming 101

Workshop planned for those interested in raising hemp

A Purdue Extension Hemp Workshop, which is jointly organized by the Purdue Extension Educators in the nine counties that make up Area 2, will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 in the Community Building on the Clark County 4-H Fairgrounds, 9608 Highway 62, in Charlestown.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. with the collecting of $10 to help cover the cost of presenters and handout materials, as well as the $10 fee for those Indiana private pesticide applicators desiring Pesticide Applicators Recertification Program (PARP) credit.  Continuing Credit Hour’s (CCH’s) have also been approved for Indiana commercial pesticide applicators in Categories 1 (3 CCH’s), 14 (2 CCH’s), and RT (3 CCH’s).  Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) for Certified Crop Advisors (CCA’s) have been requested.  The program then runs from 9 am – 3 pm.  RSVP is required by March 10 to plan for the meal and handouts. 

The workshop will feature several topics and speakers including: A Review of 2019 Hemp Production in Indiana- Marguerite Bolt, Purdue University; My experience as a hemp farmer in KY- Brennan Gilkison, Kentucky Farmer; Hemp Seed and fiber production- J.T. Workman, JT Workman Farms, Inc, KY; 2020 Hemp Agronomic Update- Thomas C. Keene, University of Kentucky; Legal requirements for Hemp Production- Justin Swanson, Bose McKinney & Evans; Researching hemp as an animal feed source- Jessica Scott, National Hemp Feed Coalition; Using SeedRight plates to plant hemp seed- Keyara Schevenius, DAVAUS, LLC Company; Federal Crop Insurance as it relates to Hemp- Rhonda Scott, German American Bank; USDA feedback on Indiana Hemp plan- Andrew Carty, Director, Division of Economic Development ISDA; Hemp Market Trends- Austin Rhodus, DREEM Nutrition; Biomass Supply Chain and Processing Updates- Dr. Yebo Li, HempRise a local hemp processor; and Hemp Regulations and Seed Information- Don Robison, Purdue University.

Partial sponsorship for the day is being provided by the German American Bank and Farm Credit-Mid America.

As stated above the workshop has been approved for Indiana commercial pesticide applicators Continuing Credit Hours (CCH’s) and private pesticide applicators PARP credit, and CEU’s for CCA’s have been applied for.  There is no charge for CCH’s or CEU’s, but PARP recipients must pay a $10 fee to receive this credit.  Applicators remember to bring your card to receive credit.
