Dogs

• "Emerson," is a male pit mix, almost a year old, a sweet boy, about 35 pounds. He was surrendered because his family couldn't take care of him. He gets along well with other dogs and would probably enjoy having a friend to play with. If you would like an application for Emerson, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: watching televised tennis, playing fetch outside, playing fetch inside. Dislikes: when ants get in his outside food bowl, ants, sticks that don't have the stamina for chewing.

• "Miley" is a 4-year-old, female terrier mix, between 25 and 30 pounds. Would be very happy to be an only child. She seems to be dog selective and would probably do best in a house without young children. She is housebroken. If you would like an application for Miley, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: rainy days to relax on the couch, knitting, Swedish cattle calls. Dislikes: siblings (human or quadruped), licorice, mornings.

• "Numan" is a male, pit bull mix, black and white, 13 months old. A nephew left Newman at his uncle's house months ago and said he would be back for him, but the uncle has his own dogs to care for, so Numan ended up at the shelter. He's a very social boy, but quiet and does well with other dogs. If you would like an application for him, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: snakes, playing pranks, world domination. Dislikes: abandonment, order, breed-specific exclusions.

• "Lenny" is a 1 1/2-year-old, male, collie mix. An Amish family had too many dogs, so they surrendered Lenny. He's a very sweet, laid-back kind of dog. He's fine with other dogs and social. He has a gorgeous, thick, wavy coat. Staff aren't sure what his breed mix actually is, but he's a unique boy. If you would like an application for Lenny, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: scrolling through Twitter for hours, organizing things, reading books on farm management. Dislikes: loud music, being left behind on car rides, fireworks.

• "Onyx" is a female, black Lab mix, about 8 years old and about 55 pounds. She was surrendered with two other dogs by an owner who could no longer take care of them. She has the beginnings of cataracts, but she's a spunky girl, who gets along well with other dogs. She's social and happy. Likes: naughty words cross-stitched with flowers onto throw pillows, rides in the car (especially to the lake), binge-watching "The Golden Girls" and MMA fighting. Dislikes: getting caught in the rain, people who don't recycle, slow internet speeds.

• "Aatu" is an adult, male shepherd-husky mix who was taken in by family members when his owner died. He didn't get along with the other family dogs, so he was brought to the shelter. Likes: pasta with red sauce, a good therapist, a home with air conditioning. Dislikes: pasta with white sauce, summer weather, lizards.

• "Buford" is a 4-5-year-old, male beagle mix, about 30 pounds. He has some hair loss due to fleas, but he has been treated and should be good in a couple weeks. He has finished his heartworm treatment and he's ready for adoption. He's good with other dogs and people, but staff aren't sure about cats. Likes: a really good belly rub, aroo-rooing, sticking his head out the window on car rides. Dislikes: fleas, closed-window car rides, lobsters (the taste, concept and sight of them).

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 3 years old, spayed. She acts like a true border collie, always looking for something to herd. She will run a fence and chase cars. She also stalks cats. Staff and her foster humans say they aren't sure she would harm them, but that this may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog. If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• "Princess" is a black Lab mix, about a year old, about 45 pounds. She was surrendered when her owner could no longer take care of her. Staff aren't sure what she is mixed with, but she has white feet with brown speckles — Aussie colors. She gets along with other dogs and has been around kids, according to the owner. She is a house dog. She was very scared a tthe shelter and didn't make a great first impression, but once they took her into the office, she was very affectionate and a lot less afraid. She's currently in foster care. If you woul like an application, contact rockhaven83@gmail.com.

• "Mickey" and "Mitchell" are 5-month-old male pit mixes, between 25 and 30 pounds. Their owner surrendered the rest of the litter when they were abotu 8 weeks old, but kept Mickey and Mitchell. These boys are not socialized, but would really like to trust people if someone would give them a chance. Like: romping, chewing on tough toys, the entire DreamWorks catalogue of fine feature films. Dislike: when their toy gets stuck under the couch, when the food bowl is empty, radishes.

Cats

• "Angelo/Angeline" is a tiger and white, adult cat. Likes: opera, antiquing, knitting. Dislikes: Jackson Pollock paintings (and, indeed, most modern art), Russian literature, poor hygeine.

• "Gerald" is a tiger and white kitten, about eight weeks old. Likes: string cheese, the good kibble, pouncing. Dislikes: cat fights on reality TV, dampness, getting his claws stuck in his towel.

• "Cotillion" is a tabby cat. Likes: dancing like no one's watching, dancing in the rain (when there's somewhere dry to go afterwards), dancing in the street. Dislikes: when someone is watching without letting them know, when E. Burton Russell, IV, puts videos of her dancing on Instagram, when the salmon is overcooked.

• "Steve" is a gray kitten, between 8 and 10 weeks. Likes: frisking, chasing the red dot, posing for Instagram. Dislikes: getting his paws wet, getting his whiskers wet, dry cat food (you see his conundrum).

• "Stella" is a long-haired, female cat, between 1 and 2 years old, mostly white with some darker patches on her head and tail, currently in foster care. She is an inside cat ONLY. Her head tilts. She has been seen by a veterinarian, but the cause is unknown. It doesn't seem to affect her. She loves to sit in your lap and be petted and is used to being in a house with other cats, big and small dogs, and kids. If you'd like to meet Stella, contact rockhaven83@gmail.com for an application. Likes: sleeping on freshly dried laundry, al dente spaghetti, napping spots near heating vents. Dislikes: stepping on a piece of tape or a sticker, humidity, leaf vegetables.

• "Mynx" is a gray tiger kitten. Likes: using their sad kitten face to their advantage (they're cute and they know it), getting out of their kennel, hunting houseplants. Dislikes: when things they'd like to knock onto the floor are too heavy or attached to the counter, when their friends don't know their Instagram angles and post bad pictures publicly, coffee (smells good, tastes bad. Why? Explain, humans).

• "Contessa Julia McDermitshire" is a gray kitten with faint stripes and a dark tail. Likes: judging your eating habits, sneaking bread, trying to eat plastic. Dislikes: being told not to eat plastic, being informed that bread is not for cats and having it taken away, election season.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.
