Dogs

• "Freya" is a female German Shepherd, 7 years old, used for breeding and rescued by a family, but they have enough dogs of their own and are looking to find a new home for her. Unfortunately, she is heartworm-positive. She is currently in foster care. She's very social and good with other dogs. She has been inside a bit and seems to enjoy it. Shelter staff are looking for a home where she can be inside 100% of the time. If you would like an application for Freya, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: a nice sunny napping spot, a good sniff in the yard, binge-watching true crime documentaries on Netflix. Dislikes: being used for other people's gain, summer temperatures, chaos.

• "Emerson," is a male pit mix, almost a year old, a sweet boy, about 35 pounds. He was surrendered because his family couldn't take care of him. He gets along well with other dogs and would probably enjoy having a friend to play with. If you would like an application for Emerson, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: watching televised tennis, playing fetch outside, playing fetch inside. Dislikes: when ants get in his outside food bowl, ants, sticks that don't have the stamina for chewing.

• "Bullitt" is a male, 4-year-old boxer, white and tan, about 55 pounds, with a full tail. He was found as a stray, but some nice people brought him to the shelter so he wouldn't get hit. He has a great boxer personality and loves to play with the other dogs. He doesn't seem interested in cats. If you would like an application for Bullitt, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: smiling, a nice cup of tea (warm water and lemon, but he can pretend) after a long day of romping with his friends, napping. Dislikes: when his napping spot gets stolen, fast cars, when it's so hot the sidewalk hurts to walk on.

• "Copper" is a male pit mix, white with tan spots, about a year old. He's a happy-go-lucky sort of guy and gets along well with other dogs, but would probably do best in a house without cats. If you would like an application for Copper, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: professional bingo, the smell of new cardboard boxes, ballroom dancing in the living room. Dislikes: alarms of any kind (except the microwave), when lint sticks to his toys, rainy days.

• "Max" is a silver Lab, about 6 years old, around 65 pounds. He showed up at someone's house and gave too many kisses, so he was brought to the shelter. He doesn't seem to be overly fond of other dogs when shelter staff checked him, but they will check again later after he's settled in. Likes: giving kisses, getting kisses, jerky of all varieties. Dislikes: not being allowed to give kisses, when the streaming radio service starts lagging and he can't hear his tunes, potholes on a roadtrip.

• "Miley" is a 4-year-old, female terrier mix, between 25 and 30 pounds. Would be very happy to be an only child. She seems to be dog selective and would probably do best in a house without young children. She is housebroken. If you would like an application for Miley, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: rainy days to relax on the couch, knitting, Swedish cattle calls. Dislikes: siblings (human or quadruped), licorice, mornings.

• "Brody" is a 2-year-old, male, Lab mix, gorgeous with golden blond hair and big, about 70 pounds. He was a little uncertain at the shelter when he first got there, but he's getting more used to the routine and is doing much better. He really enjoys play time with the other dogs. Likes: romping, chasing, advanced statistics. Dislikes: yodeling, anything that has to be watched on a screen, cold coffee.

• "Numan" is a male, pit bull mix, black and white, 13 months old. A nephew left Loki at his uncle's house months ago and said he would be back for him, but the uncle has his own dogs to care for, so Numan ended up at the shelter. He's a very social boy, but quiet and does well with other dogs. If you would like an application for him, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: snakes, playing pranks, world domination. Dislikes: abandonment, order, breed-specific exclusions.

• "Samuel" is a 1 1/2-year-old, male, collie mix. An Amish family had too many dogs, so they surrendered Samuel. He's a very sweet, laid-back kind of dog. He's fine with other dogs and social. He has a gorgeous, thick, wavy coat. Staff aren't sure what his breed mix actually is, but he's a unique boy. If you would like an application for Samuel, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: scrolling through Twitter for hours, organizing things, reading books on farm management. Dislikes: loud music, being left behind on car rides, fireworks.

• "Rival" is a female pointer mix, about 2 and around 45 pounds. She's scared in her kennel with all the dog noise, but she relaxes when she is in the office. Surrendered when her human had to move. If you would like an application for her, contact rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: squeaky toys, Cheetos, superhero movies. Dislikes: noise, alfalfa, bees.

• "Buford" is a 4-5-year-old, male beagle mix, about 30 pounds. He has some hair loss due to fleas, but he has been treated and should be good in a couple weeks. He's good with other dogs and people, but staff aren't sure about cats. Likes: a really good belly rub, aroo-rooing, sticking his head out the window on car rides. Dislikes: fleas, closed-window car rides, lobsters (the taste, concept and sight of them).

• "Duke" is a male, Lab mix, 1 year, about 45 pounds. He's a sweet boy who is good with other dogs and loves people. Likes: Popeye's chicken sandwiches, Chik-fil-A chicken sandwiches, chicken nuggets. Dislikes: broccoli, celery, rutabaga.

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 3 years old, spayed. She acts like a true border collie, always looking for something to herd. She will run a fence and chase cars. She also stalks cats. Staff and her foster humans say they aren't sure she would harm them, but that this may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog. If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• "Bingo" is a 7-month-old male, mostly black with white and tan, about 50 pounds with more growing to do. He's good with other dogs and is social and outgoing. If you would like an application for him, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: trampolines, cantaloupe, trivia games. Dislikes: the game Bingo, dogs who don't understand the butt-sniffing greeting protocol, ants.

• "Merlot" is a female pit mix, about 55 pounds. Unfortunately, she appears to not have had the best life. Her skin is in pretty bad shape from fleas. She has been given some medicine and her hair should start coming in shortly. Likes: playing with the other dogs at the shelter, toys that squeak, toys that crinkle. Dislikes: wine snobs, pests (use flea, tick and heartworm preventative on all pets), when her blanket isn't rumpled the way she likes it.

Cats

• "E. Burton Russell, IV, Esquire" is a black and white kitten, teenager. Likes: checking Instagram for cat pics, taking cat pics for Instagram, being a cat. Dislikes: this thing, that thing, and those things in particular.

• "Cotillion" is a tabby cat. Likes: dancing like no one's watching, dancing in the rain (when there's somewhere dry to go afterwards), dancing in the street. Dislikes: when someone is watching without letting them know, when E. Burton Russell, IV, puts videos of her dancing on Instagram, when the salmon is overcooked.

• "Maureen/Marlo" is a teenaged tiger and white kitten. Likes: pouncing, ruling small island nations, batting at string. Dislikes: ineptitude, incompetence, insubordination.

• So many kittens. Spaying and/or neutering cats is crucial to overcome the current feral cat problem facing the county. Until then, these babies need good homes where they'll be kept safe and healthy. At $50, which includes a voucher for a required spay/neutering procedure and the first round of shots, the shelter is basically paying you to adopt these cats and kittens.

• "Mynx" is a gray tiger kitten. Likes: using their sad kitten face to their advantage (they're cute and they know it), getting out of their kennel, hunting houseplants. Dislikes: when things they'd like to knock onto the floor are too heavy or attached to the counter, when their friends don't know their Instagram angles and post bad pictures publicly, coffee (smells good, tastes bad. Why? Explain, humans).

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.

Shelter hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Closed on Sunday, Monday and holidays. Contact Salem Animal Control or the Salem Shelter at 812-883-3673 or Washington County Animal Control at 812-883-5999.
