Dogs

• "Geoffrey" is a male, 2-3-year-old pit mix, about 60 pounds. He came in as a stray and he's good with other dogs. Likes: vanilla pudding, singing opera and showtunes, his snazzy blue collar. Dislikes: soap operas, pine needles (they taste awful!).

• "Rodney" is a senior, hound-terrier mix, about 40 pounds. He came to the shelter as a stray with his friend and he's really scared at the shelter. Likes: Little Debbie snack cakes, peace and quiet, a quick meander through a forest. Dislikes: loud barking, getting lost, sasquatches.

• "Trinity" is a female shepherd mix, about 35 pounds, tan, 1-2 years old. Sweet and gentle and good with other dogs. She didn't pay attention to cats. Likes: honeysuckle, Chihuly glass sculptures, lilypad gardens. Dislikes: bees, rainy days, sticks that fall apart as soon as you start chewing.

• "Bingo Washisnamo" is a 1- to 2-year-old, male dog, white with black splotches, about 45 pounds. He's good with other dogs, loves people and seems to be scared of cats. Likes: the idea of cats, the color red, long chats over plates of barbecue. Dislikes: the actual experience of cats, scary violin music, hedgehogs.

• "Bodhi" is a male, Catahoula mix, 11 years old, about 45 pounds. He was surrendered by his family without a reason, but staff say he's a nice boy with several more years of love to give. He's good with other dogs and has a very unique coat coloration. Likes: warm beds, soft hands, French fries. Dislikes: when his lip gets stuck on his teeth, boiled eggs (taste and smell), people who only want young dogs.

• "Renegade" is a 3-year-old, male pit mix, dark brown and about 45 pounds. He's pretty high-energy and great with people (and their laps), but, pending more evaluation, seems to be best as an only-dog. Likes: popcorn of all flavors, cuddles, nature documentaries. Dislikes: any movie where the dog dies, when his jowl gets stuck on his tooth, sprinkles.

• "Arrow" is a 1- to 2-year-old, male, boxer mix, about 50 pounds. A good, handsome boy, enjoys other dogs and people. Likes: rides in the car, romps in the woods, pizza crusts. Dislikes: thunder, death metal music, baths.

• "Dozer" is a 3-year-old, male pit mix, about 45 pounds. He's sad at the shelter and isn't eating well. He will eat his meal when shelter staff feed him canned food off a fork. He'll sit nicely and wait for his next bite. His original owner gave Dozer to a friend when the other male dog in the family decided he didn't like the competition. Dozer was picked up as a stray and his new owner didn't come for him. He did great with another dog when staff tested him, even when the other dog went over his back. Likes: cornbread still warm from the oven, fishing at the lake, watching college basketball. Dislikes: being abandoned, living off the land, the movie "Homeward Bound."

• "Numan" is a male, pit bull mix, black and white, 13 months old. A nephew left Loki at his uncle's house months ago and said he would be back for him, but the uncle has his own dogs to care for, so Numan ended up at the shelter. He's a very social boy, but quiet and does well with other dogs. If you would like an application for him, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: snakes, playing pranks, world domination. Dislikes: abandonment, order, breed-specific exclusions.

• "August" is a male, 3-year-old hound mix, about 65 pounds. He's a tall, leggy boy, all black. He appears to need to be an only dog, but staff will evaluate him further after he's had some time to settle in at the shelter. Likes: hot dogs (stolen is best, but he'll accept those actually given to him), sniffing, country music. Dislikes: rides in the car with the windows up, bathing, bassoon music.

• "Shiloh" is a 4-year-old, female shepherd mix, about 50 pounds. Surrendered with MooMoo when their humans split up. She's a leggy girl and very social. She's scared in her kennel, but when she comes into the shelter office, she is very outgoing. If you would like an application for her, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: MooMoo (who was brought to the shelter with her), African violets, people who talk nicely to her without babytalking. Dislikes: weeds in her begonias, people who set their phone ringtones to nursery rhyme songs, pumice.

• "Cherokee" is a 2-year-old, male Lab-German shorthair mix, reddish brown, with a white chest, about 50 pounds. Appears to need to be an only dog, but staff will evaluate him after he settles in more at the shelter. Likes: pancakes, gravy, romping. Dislikes: clumps of grass that look like moles but aren't, for-profit prisons, when pancake syrup gets all sticky and he can't lick it off his own nose.

• "Astrid" is a female, black Lab mix, 1- to 2 years old, with a gorgeous, thick, wavy coat on the top of her back, about 40 pounds. She's a sweet, easy-going girl. Likes: lasagna, trots outside to check the mail or water the garden, binge-watching Animal Planet. Dislikes: rainy weather, soggy croutons, dill.

• "Callie" is a female shepherd mix, 1- to 2 years old, about 35 pounds, tan and black. A little unsure at the shelter. Likes: board game tournaments (she'll smoke you at Monopoly), chasing a ball, warm weather. Dislikes: draw-four cards in Uno, overly scented candles, when the grass is wet and sticks to her legs.

• "Ranger" is a male Lab mix, 5- to 7 years old, about 45 pounds. He's hesitant at the shelter and would do OK with another submissive dog. Likes: documentaries on Army Rangers, reruns of Power Rangers, ranging. Dislikes: insubordination, when your hands aren't doing anything and still aren't petting him, the rise of the Instagram "influencer."

• "Duke" is a male, Lab mix, 1 year, about 45 pounds. He's a sweet boy who is good with other dogs and loves people. Likes: Popeye's chicken sandwiches, Chik-fil-A chicken sandwiches, chicken nuggets. Dislikes: broccoli, celery, rutabaga.

• "Marley" is a 1-year-old, female Lab mix, about 40 pounds. She was surrendered by her owner; they said she was too active, but shelter staff say she has not shown this at the shelter. She's good with other dogs. If you would like an application for her, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: birdwatching, burnt toast, butter. Dislikes: when people make Marley-and-Me jokes, burnt waffles, lint.

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 3 years old, spayed. She acts like a true border collie, always looking for something to herd. She will run a fence and chase cars. She also stalks cats. Staff and her foster humans say they aren't sure she would harm them, but that this may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog. If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• "Harley" is a 4-year-old, female Lab mix, about 55 pounds. She was just too much dog for an older woman. She's not hyper, but she does need to work on her leash manners and would definitely like another dog to play with. If you would like an application for her, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: black and white photography, cheese (all varieties), classical music. Dislikes: citrus-scented cleaners, overcooked pasta (al dente, people! Al dente!), restrictions during walkies.

Cats

• So many kittens. Spaying and/or neutering cats is crucial to overcome the current feral cat problem facing the county. Until then, these babies need good homes where they'll be kept safe and healthy. At $50, which includes a voucher for a required spay/neutering procedure and the first round of shots, the shelter is basically paying you to adopt these cats and kittens.

• "Alexandra" is a female, yellow tiger cat. Likes: birdwatching, competative yarn-craft disembowelment, judging passersby. Dislikes: dampness, when that thing is on the table when she doesn't want it there, anchovies.

• "Whisko" is a white and yellow kitten, 8 weeks. Likes: people watching, bird watching, watching the world spin. Dislikes: being interrupted, emo music, professional skateboarding.

• "Mynx" is a gray tiger kitten. Likes: using their sad kitten face to their advantage (they're cute and they know it), getting out of their kennel, hunting houseplants. Dislikes: when things they'd like to knock onto the floor are too heavy or attached to the counter, when their friends don't know their Instagram angles and post bad pictures publicly, coffee (smells good, tastes bad. Why? Explain, humans).

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.

Shelter hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Closed on Sunday, Monday and holidays. Contact Salem Animal Control or the Salem Shelter at 812-883-3673 or Washington County Animal Control at 812-883-5999.
