Whisko, Dozer, Boots and Bodhi are waiting for you at the shelter!

Dogs

• "Bumba" is a 5-6-year-old male, black, flat-coated retriever mix with a dignified gray beard, about 50 pounds. He's a sweet, middle-age boy who has been at the shelter for more than a week now. Shelter staff say his owner knows he's there, but hasn't come for him. He was apparently left to wander the neighborhood, so a neighbor called when it got so hot in July and Bumba got to spend those really hot days in the AC. Likes: spring/fall weather, rambling, stability. Dislikes: being forgotten, summer heat, kumquats.

• "Geoffrey" is a male, 2-3-year-old pit mix, about 60 pounds. He came in as a stray and he's good with other dogs. Likes: vanilla pudding, singing opera and showtunes, his snazzy blue collar. Dislikes: soap operas, pine needles (they taste awful!).

• "Marty" is a 3-year-old, male beagle mix, about 20 pounds. Marty showed up with severe flea dermatitis. He has been on medications and his coat is starting to look better already. Give him another two to three weeks and he'll be back to his knockout self. He's also very social. Likes: flea prevention, Cheetos, succulent gardening. Dislikes: leaf vegetables, socioeconomic inequity in urban areas, water fountains that splash up unexpectedly from the flat ground.

• "Zoey" is a 1- to 2-year-old, female Lab mix, black and white, about 35 pounds, surrendered by her family when they had to move. She's mostly housebroken; she'll go to the door to ask out but you have to watch. She doesn't give you much notice. She loves to play with other dogs, but would do best with a tolerant dog. Zoey hasn't learned how to greet other dogs properly and will be right in their face. Nothing wrong except some dogs might have a problem with her exuberance. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: her toy ball, her toy bone, long rides in the car that end at the park or the lake or the woods or … Dislikes: car rides that end at the vet, tomatoes, ocean pollution.

• "Bodhi" is a male, Catahoula mix, 11 years old, about 45 pounds. He was surrendered by his family without a reason, but staff say he's a nice boy with several more years of love to give. He's good with other dogs and has a very unique coat coloration. Likes: warm beds, soft hands, French fries. Dislikes: when his lip gets stuck on his teeth, boiled eggs (taste and smell), people who only want young dogs.

• "Dozer" is a 3-year-old, male pit mix, about 45 pounds. He's sad at the shelter and isn't eating well. He will eat his meal when shelter staff feed him canned food off a fork. He'll sit nicely and wait for his next bite. His original owner gave Dozer to a friend when the other male dog in the family decided he didn't like the competition. Dozer was picked up as a stray and his new owner didn't come for him. He did great with another dog when staff tested him, even when the other dog went over his back. Likes: cornbread still warm from the oven, fishing at the lake, watching college basketball. Dislikes: being abandoned, living off the land, the movie "Homeward Bound."

• "Loki" is a male, pit bull mix, black and white, 13 months old. A nephew left Loki at his uncle's house months ago and said he would be back for him, but the uncle has his own dogs to care for, so Loki ended up at the shelter. He's a very social boy, but quiet and does well with other dogs. If you would like an application for him, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: snakes, playing pranks, world domination. Dislikes: abandonment, order, breed-specific exclusions.

• "MooMoo" is a 7-year-old, female, black Lab, about 50 pounds. Surrendered with Shiloh when their humans split up. Good with other dogs. Likes: Shiloh, snickerdoodles, a nice breeze. Dislikes: cows, whistles, French dressing.

• "Shiloh" is a 4-year-old, female shepherd mix, about 50 pounds. Surrendered with MooMoo when their humans split up. She's a leggy girl and very social. She's scared in her kennel, but when she comes into the shelter office, she is very outgoing. Likes: MooMoo, African violets, people who talk nicely to her without babytalking. Dislikes: weeds in her begonias, people who set their phone ringtones to nursery rhyme songs, pumice.

• "Eva" is a one-year-old, female Lab mix, about 40 pounds. Looks like a miniature black Lab, very social and would love another dog to play with. Likes: innapropriate sayings cross-stitched with flowers around them, antiquing, singing along with Broadway soundtracks. Dislikes: celery, clear tape getting stuck to her paw, giftwrapping.

• "Sylvia" is a 3-4-year-old Lab, about 45 to 50 pounds. She was surrendered with two other dogs when their owner was evicted. She's great with people, but has not tested well with either male or female dogs. She was kenneled with the other two dogs, so shelter staff will retest her again soon. She will make aggressive moves toward other dogs, so she'll probably be best as an only dog. She appears to have had several litters of puppies. Likes: reruns of The Golden Girls (Sophia is her favorite), cheesecake, being a friend. Dislikes: anyone encroaching on her spotlight, those who refuse to genuflect to her majesty, paperclips.

• "Marley" is a 1-year-old, female Lab mix, about 40 pounds. She was surrendered by her owner; they said she was too active, but shelter staff say she has not shown this at the shelter. She's good with other dogs. If you would like an application for her, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: birdwatching, burnt toast, butter. Dislikes: when people make Marley-and-Me jokes, burnt waffles, lint.

• "Amber" is a 4-year-old catahoula mix. She was surrendered with her daughter when their owner died and may be best as an only dog. She's shy, but social. Likes: sparkly rocks, tacos, autumn. Dislikes: having to leave her sparkly rocks outside, when all the fillings fall out of the tacos because of the crunchy shell, when all the autumn leaves get soggy.

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 3 years old, spayed. She acts like a true border collie, always looking for something to herd. She will run a fence and chase cars. She also stalks cats. Staff and her foster humans say they aren't sure she would harm them, but that this may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog. If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• "Harley" is a 4-year-old, female Lab mix, about 55 pounds. She was just too much dog for an older woman. She's not hyper, but she does need to work on her leash manners and would definitely like another dog to play with. If you would like an application for her, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: black and white photography, cheese (all varieties), classical music. Dislikes: citrus-scented cleaners, overcooked pasta (al dente, people! Al dente!), restrictions during walkies.

• "Forseti" is a 4 1/2-year-old male wire-haired fox terrier mix, about 25-30 pounds. Surrendered when his family moved. He's good with kids, OK with dogs and hasn't been around cats. If you would like an application, contact rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: pretzels (crunchy and soft), animal-themed knickknacks, dramatic comedies. Dislikes: when his collar shifts and his tags are stuck on the back of his neck, baths, car rides with no open windows.

Cats

• So many kittens. Spaying and/or neutering cats is crucial to overcome the current feral cat problem facing the county. Until then, these babies need good homes where they'll be kept safe and healthy. At $50, which includes a voucher for a required spay/neutering procedure and the first round of shots, the shelter is basically paying you to adopt these cats and kittens.

• "Apollo and Artemis" are 12-week-old black and white kittens. Very sweet. Like: competitive archery, lute music, mountain hikes. Dislike: being pestered, snakes, goats.

• "Whisko" is a white and yellow kitten, 8 weeks. Likes: people watching, bird watching, watching the world spin. Dislikes: being interrupted, emo music, professional skateboarding.

• "Boba" is a black kitten, 8-10 weeks. Likes: spooky movies, true crime podcasts, ice cream. Dislikes: superstition, the too-light penalties for things like child abuse in the American justice system, cucumbers.

• "Boots" is a male cat, black and white. Likes: cuddling, Italian opera, cheese and garlic croutons. Dislikes: gummy candy, watermelon, the little red dot.

• "Mynx" is a gray tiger kitten. Likes: using their sad kitten face to their advantage (they're cute and they know it), getting out of their kennel, hunting houseplants. Dislikes: when things they'd like to knock onto the floor are too heavy or attached to the counter, when their friends don't know their Instagram angles and post bad pictures publicly, coffee (smells good, tastes bad. Why? Explain, humans).

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.

Shelter hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Closed on Sunday, Monday and holidays. Contact Salem Animal Control or the Salem Shelter at 812-883-3673 or Washington County Animal Control at 812-883-5999.
