#FurryFriendFriday pets

Jinxie, Briar, Cleo and Zip are all waiting for you at the shelter!

Dogs

• "Boomer" is a 6-7-year-old, male, boxer-Lab mix, black with white markings, about 60 pounds. What a great guy! There is just no way to show his personality in a picture. Someone found him with his leash attached. It's unclear whether he was tied out by his leash and got loose or how exactly he and his owner are no longer together. There were kids at the house where he stayed for a few hours while they searched for his owner. When they couldn't locate an owner, Boomer ended up at the shelter. He is housebroken, uses his feet like a boxer and has that great boxer temperament. If you would like an application for Boomer, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: romping, watching MMA on TV, cuddling. Dislikes: not having enough room for the zoomies when he feels like it, fences, freaky-looking clouds.

• "Bella" is a female heeler, 2, between 25 and 30 pounds. She and Tex were surrendered when their owner was diagnosed with cancer and sold/gave all their possession away. She is very quiet and tentative. Sweet girl who is a little confused right now about why her life has changed so much. She also recently had puppies and those were given away. If you would like an application for Bella, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: watermelon, order, interior design. Dislikes: cancer, change, fruity tea.

• "Tex" is a male heeler, 1, about 40 pounds. He was surrendered with Bella when their owner was diagnosed with cancer and sold/gave away everything. Tex sounds tough but then will hop up and ask for hugs. He is playful. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: watching televised talent shows, toys, running around. Dislikes: cancer, those dandelion seed poofs (they taste terrible), pan flute music.

• "Zoey" is a 1- to 2-year-old, female Lab mix, black and white, about 35 pounds, surrendered by her family when they had to move. She's mostly housebroken; she'll go to the door to ask out but you have to watch. She doesn't give you much notice. She loves to play with other dogs, but would do best with a tolerant dog. Zoey hasn't learned how to greet other dogs properly and will be right in their face. Nothing wrong except some dogs might have a problem with her exuberance. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: her toy ball, her toy bone, long rides in the car that end at the park or the lake or the woods or … Dislikes: car rides that end at the vet, tomatoes, ocean pollution.

• "Zip" is a male terrier mix, 3, about 20 pounds. This little guy was abandoned at a house with other dogs. A neighbor took all the dogs in and found homes for all of them except Zip. Zip stayed at their house for a few weeks and never made a mess in the house. He got along with the other dogs at the house, but they didn't keep him because one of their dogs did not like Zip. At the shelter, he is growly with other dogs but has been around other dogs. It may just be that he is nervous at the shelter. We will need to do some more checking. If you would like an application for Zip, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: bacon, biscuits, personal space. Dislikes: crowds, loud noises, neon colors.

• "Gertie" is a 2-3-year-old basset mix, about 45 pounds, low to ground like a basset hound. She's currently in foster care, living in a house with multiple dogs. She's not really a player but is right there with all the others. Not sure about cats. Seems to be housebroken. If you would like an application, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: hosting magnificent garden parties, sniffing things, rollicking comedies featuring Will Ferrell. Dislikes: cleaning up after magnificent garden parties, when things sniff back, poverty.

•  "Bailey" is a Great Pyrenees mix, 4-5 year-old spayed female, about 70 pounds. Surrendered because her mom got sick and could not take care of her any longer. She's social and gets along well with other dogs. Has double dew claws like a Pyr but does not have a Pyr coat. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: fall, crunchy leaves, crunchy peanut butter. Dislikes: summer heat and humidity, pollen, hot Cheetos.

• "Chad" and "Chip" are male beagle buddies, 4-5 years old, around 25 to 30 pounds. They were found wandering down the highway. They both appear to be similar in age and may be brothers. They're good with other dogs and did not pay any attention to the cats. Quiet in their kennel. If you would like an application for either Chad or Chip (or both), please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Like: country roads that take them home to the place they belong, public transportation, naps on couches. Dislike: rain, loud vehicles, hot asphalt.

• "Briar" is a male beagle, 5, very cute, about 30 pounds. He's quiet in his kennel and appears to be housebroken. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: sniffing, looking up soulfully at you while you're eating, tennis. Dislikes: ferns, soggy toast (he'll eat it, but it's not really toast anymore, is it?), pea gravel.

• "Briita" is a 6-month-old pit mix, tan, cute with a short, little tail, about 35 pounds. She seems unsure how to play with other dogs but thinks she can get the hang of that quickly. Likes: making friends, romping, daydreraming. Dislikes: the idea and practice of celery, being told 'no,' ants.

• "Kendall" is a 2-year-old male Lab-hound mix, about 45 pounds. Seems to do better with female dogs. Likes: sunny napping spots, dismantling the establishment, thwarting his enemies. Dislikes: male dog drama, super loud trucks, pickles.

• "Bella" is a heeler mix, 1-2, about 35 pounds, with beautiful blue eyes. Surrendered with her sister, Oreo, because they kept escaping from their pen and tearing up the garden. She's scared and shy at the shelter. Likes: gardening, fine literature on audiobook, rampant organization. Dislikes: Clutter, rap music, aphids.

• "Oreo" is a heeler mix, 1-2, about 45 pounds, one blue eye, one brown eye. Surrendered with her sister, Bella, because they kept escaping from their pen and tearing up the garden. Oreo is the more outgoing of the two. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: weeding, collecting heirloom seeds, counted cross stitch. Dislikes: finches, overcooked squash, recipe blogs where the first 10 paragraphs are the life story of the blogger instead of getting to the point with the recipe (COME ON, CHERYL, JUST TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO GET AT THE STORE! I DON'T CARE WHAT COMES TO YOUR MIND WHEN YOU SEE LEMONS!)

• "Hannah" is a 2-year-old catahoula mix, about 45 to 50 pounds. She was surrendered with her mother when her owner died and may be best as an only dog. She's gorgeous and great with people. Likes: live action role-play games, listening to her stories, gummy candy. Dislikes: being lonely, Mondays, pollution.

• "Amber" is a 4-year-old catahoula mix. She was surrendered with her daughter when their owner died and may be best as an only dog. She's shy, but social. Likes: sparkly rocks, tacos, autumn. Dislikes: having to leave her sparkly rocks outside, when all the fillings fall out of the tacos because of the crunchy shell, when all the autumn leaves get soggy.

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 3 years old, spayed. She acts like a true border collie, always looking for something to herd. She will run a fence and chase cars. She also stalks cats. Staff and her foster humans say they aren't sure she would harm them, but that this may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog. If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• "Bronson" is a 2-year-old, male Rottweiler-shepherd mix, between 45 and 50 pounds. This guy is bummed at the shelter. He just lays in his kennel. When he gets time out to be with another dog he plays very well. He's active but not over the top with energy. If you would like an application for Bronson, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: waffles, binge-watching whatever you want on Netflix (it's about the experience, not the show), watching the bird feeder for any sign of avian revolt. Dislikes: avian revolt, kennels, closets.

• "Forseti" is a 4 1/2-year-old male wire-haired fox terrier mix, about 25-30 pounds. Surrendered when his family moved. He's good with kids, OK with dogs and hasn't been around cats. If you would like an application, contact rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: pretzels (crunchy and soft), animal-themed knickknacks, dramatic comedies. Dislikes: when his collar shifts and his tags are stuck on the back of his neck, baths, car rides with no open windows.

"Choo Choo" is a chocolate Lab, about 8 years old. He was surrendered because owner did not have enough time for him. Lonesome Choo Choo went to the neighbors every day to lay on their porch. He seems to do better with female dogs and needs some exercise to get the extra weight off (don't we all, Choo Choo. Don't. We. All.). Likes: lounging, potato-based snacks, meat-based snacks. Dislikes: jogging, celery, drama.

• "Sam" is a 2-year-old, male, Walker coon hound, about 60 pounds. He's beautiful with dark, bright colors. He was surrendered by his owner after his owner got hurt and isn't able to hunt. He got Sam two years ago with the intent to train him to hunt. Likes: romping, catching stuff, peanut butter. Dislikes: being kept just for what he's being trained to do, being given up because the activity a human had in mind didn't pan out, dill.

Cats

• "Fizzywicket" is a male, adult white and orange tiger cat. Likes: CGI animated movies, lounging poolside, Twizzlers. Dislikes: ravioli, pickles, static cling.

• "Jinxie" is an adult, female black cat. Likes: singing opera, meandering, watching the garden. Dislikes: superstition, tomato sauce, thunder.

• "Cleo" is a female, teenage, black and white cat. Likes: gold jewelry, pizza crusts, watching any show on the CW. Dislikes: parental restrictions, bullying in schools, the often ridiculously high cost of health care.

• "Genevieve" is an adult, female tiger cat. Likes: purring, sneaking, fresh swordfish steaks (grilled with a bit of lemon). Dislikes: knitting, poor diction, high countertops.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.
