Dogs

• "Athena" is a husky-shepherd mix, female, 1-2 years old and around 45 pounds. She was found in Pekin as a stray and may be best as an only dog. Likes: waxing poetic, getting her own way, her own kiddie pool (or grown-up pool with a floatie). Dislikes: bath time, houseplants, Irish tapdancing.

• "Zoey" is a 1- to 2-year-old, female Lab mix, black and white, about 35 pounds, surrendered by her family when they had to move. She's mostly housebroken; she'll go to the door to ask out but you have to watch. She doesn't give you much notice. She loves to play with other dogs, but would do best with a tolerant dog. Zoey hasn't learned how to greet other dogs properly and will be right in their face. Nothing wrong except some dogs might have a problem with her exuberance. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: her toy ball, her toy bone, long rides in the car that end at the park or the lake or the woods or … Dislikes: car rides that end at the vet, tomatoes, ocean pollution.

• "JJ" is a neutered black Lab mix, about 50 pounds, came to the shelter as a stray with another dog. Seems to like other dogs. Likes: Irish tapdancing, his snappy red harness, turtles. Dislikes: lint, refried beans, celery.

• "Gertie" is a 2-3-year-old basset mix, about 45 pounds, low to ground like a basset hound. She's currently in foster care, living in a house with multiple dogs. She's not really a player but is right there with all the others. Not sure about cats. Seems to be housebroken. If you would like an application, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: hosting magnificent garden parties, sniffing things, rollicking comedies featuring Will Ferrell. Dislikes: cleaning up after magnificent garden parties, when things sniff back, poverty.

• "Teddy" is a male, wire-haired terrier, black and white, came in as a stray. Likes: fiddles, those memory foam beds (dog beds or human bed mattresses — he's not picky), lemonade. Dislikes: cuckoo clocks, unexpected pets, vegetarian versions of meat.

• "Cornelius" is a 2-year-old beagle mix. He was found running down the highway. Likes: reading up on Greek mythology, succulents, owls. Dislikes: pine cones (look like toy, are not; they're lies), trucks that poof out those big clouds of nasty, black diesel smoke (Who are you trying to impress? You're buying groceries and there isn't a speck of dirt on the truck — that's no farm truck), ska music.

• "Carlton" is a male beagle, 6-7, skinny at 20 pounds. This boy doesn't appear to be very well taken care of. He showed up covered in ticks, skinny and his coat does not have a very good feel to it. However, that's nothing some love won't fix. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com.

• "Briita" is a 6-month-old pit mix, tan, cute with a short, little tail, about 35 pounds. She seems unsure how to play with other dogs but thinks she can get the hang of that quickly. Likes: making friends, romping, daydreraming. Dislikes: the idea and practice of celery, being told 'no,' ants.

• "Bella" is a heeler mix, 1-2, about 35 pounds, with beautiful blue eyes. Surrendered with her sister, Oreo, because they kept escaping from their pen and tearing up the garden. She's scared and shy at the shelter. Likes: gardening, fine literature on audiobook, rampant organization. Dislikes: Clutter, rap music, aphids.

• "Oreo" is a heeler mix, 1-2, about 45 pounds, one blue eye, one brown eye. Surrendered with her sister, Bella, because they kept escaping from their pen and tearing up the garden. Oreo is the more outgoing of the two. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: weeding, collecting heirloom seeds, counted cross stitch. Dislikes: finches, overcooked squash, recipe blogs where the first 10 paragraphs are the life story of the blogger instead of getting to the point with the recipe (COME ON, CHERYL, JUST TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO GET AT THE STORE! I DON'T CARE WHAT COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU SEE LEMONS!)

• "Hannah" is a 2-year-old catahoula mix, about 45 to 50 pounds. She was surrendered with her mother when her owner died and may be best as an only dog. She's gorgeous and great with people. Likes: live action role-play games, listening to her stories, gummy candy. Dislikes: being lonely, Mondays, pollution.

• "Amber" is a 4-year-old catahoula mix. She was surrendered with her daughter when their owner died and may be best as an only dog. She's shy, but social. Likes: sparkly rocks, tacos, autumn. Dislikes: having to leave her sparkly rocks outside, when all the fillings fall out of the tacos because of the crunchy shell, when all the autumn leaves get soggy.

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 3 years old, spayed. She acts like a true border collie, always looking for something to herd. She will run a fence and chase cars. She also stalks cats. Staff and her foster humans say they aren't sure she would harm them, but that this may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog. If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• "Levi" is a heeler mix, 3-4 years, about 30 pounds. Small for a heeler. Has some previous training — knows things like sit, shake and how to sit up and beg. Likes: snacks, smiling, playing catch and chase. Dislikes: not getting to go on car rides when everyone else gets to go on car rides, being left behind in general, missing out.

• "Arturo" is a male pit, 2, about 50 pounds and housebroken. Likes: chilling on the couch watching Food Network ("Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" is his favorite), listening to online radio, those carrot fries he found on Pinterest. Dislikes: soggy carrot fries, when people don't follow the instructions on a recipe and complain it didn't work, patchy internet.

• "Forseti" is a 4 1/2-year-old male wire-haired fox terrier mix, about 25-30 pounds. Surrendered when his family moved. He's good with kids, OK with dogs and hasn't been around cats. If you would like an application, contact rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: pretzels (crunchy and soft), animal-themed knickknacks, dramatic comedies. Dislikes: when his collar shifts and his tags are stuck on the back of his neck, baths, car rides with no open windows.

• "Red" is a male, tan and white, Lab-pit bull, about 50 pounds. Came into the shelter as a stray. Likes: beef wellington, rampant profanity, fine dining. Dislikes: undercooked chicken, overcooked waffles, propriety.

• "Sam" is a 2-year-old, male, Walker coon hound, about 60 pounds. He's beautiful with dark, bright colors. He was surrendered by his owner after his owner got hurt and isn't able to hunt. He got Sam two years ago with the intent to train him to hunt. Likes: romping, catching stuff, peanut butter. Dislikes: being kept just for what he's being trained to do, being given up because the activity a human had in mind didn't pan out, dill.

• "Bart" is a male, 2- to 3-year-old silver Lab-pit mix, between 45 and 50 pounds, shorter legs. What a gorgeous boy! He has the longer hair of a Lab and that gorgeous blocky head. He loves to play with other dogs and staff say they have never heard him bark at the shelter. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: HBO comedy specials, streaming radio on long car rides, chicken tenders. Dislikes: when no one wants to play, when it rains and he can't romp in the yard, mosquitos.

Cats

• "Silas" is a very social, fluffy orange cat. Likes: taking careful consideration from all points of view (including upside down), cheese, home improvement shows (ENOUGH OF THE SHIPLAP, JOANNA). Dislikes: burlap, silk flowers, carrots.

• "Conchita" is a large, middle-aged female calico, surrendered when her human could no longer care for her. She has beautiful clear colors. She came from a home with an older owner and is used to a quiet household, so she would probably do best in a similar setting. Likes: doilies, riding her late-model Mustang GT Fastback (with her butler human driving, of course), classical music on max volume. Dislikes: cacophony, misogyny (intended or accidental — be more careful in your words and actions), clocks.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.
