Dogs

• “Penny,” the female, brindle pit mix, 1-2 years, is very social and happy and weighs about 40 to 45 pounds. Likes: comedic memoirs on audiobook, watching the Travel Channel, shows about ghost hunters. Dislikes: how the History Channel has more shows about aliens than actual history, when her toy gets stuck behind the couch, when she sneezes really hard and her ear goes inside out.

• "Baxter" is a male, chocolate Lab, 2-3 years, around 45 pounds. He's the latest in a string of heartworm-positive dogs brought to the shelter. PLEASE have your dog tested and start them on heart worm preventative. There is nothing else you can do to prevent your dog from getting heart worms. It is carried by mosquitoes. His heart worm treatment will be $300 or more. Likes: Cool Ranch Doritos, bean dip, gardening. Dislikes: celery, slippery hardwood floors, moss.

• "Gertie" is a 2-3-year-old basset mix. May be best as an only dog. She's stressed out at the shelter and is losing weight. She's down to 45 pounds. Likes: hosting magnificent garden parties, sniffing things, rollicking comedies featuring Will Ferrell. Dislikes: cleaning up after magnificent garden parties, when things sniff back, poverty.

• "Cali" is a 2-year-old, female hound mix, currently receiving heartworm treatments. She's one of nine dogs brought to the shelter after their owner fell outside during the cold weather and passed away. Some of this person's dogs also died, but nine were rescued. Most of the dogs are missing their front teeth. Staff assume they were trying to escape an enclosure. These dogs have been warm and fed since coming to the shelter and are looking for their forever homes so they'll never need to be cold or hungry again. All are between 25 and 50 pounds. Of the nine dogs, six are heartworm positive and shelter staff are raising funds to treat them. Each treatment will cost a few hundred dollars, but without it, the worms will fill their hearts and cause an early, painful death. The dogs are shy, but social. Most seem to want to be lap dogs. Cali is good with kids and other dogs. Working on house breaking - not 100% but getting close. She needs to be kept quiet for a month and then can go back to being a regular dog. If you would like an application for Cali, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Cali likes: nice walks by quiet water, white river rafting, good bluegrass bands (live music is preferred, but not too close to the stage because it gets too loud). Dislikes: when it gets too loud, gluten-free pizza crust, broccoli.

• "Miley" is a female, beagle/terrier mix, who seems to do well with dogs her size and smaller, but bigger dogs intimidate her. She would probably do best in a home with older children. Likes: scrolling through Instagram, Broadway musicals, tracking down deals at sales tables at department stores. Dislikes: getting her nails caught on knitted scarves, turtles, political news.

• "Poco" is an adult chihuahua, about 15 pounds. Probably middle age. His eyes are clear but his teeth are not good. His tongue sticks out sometimes because his teeth do not keep it in his mouth. There is a dental in his future. Cute but sad. He is nervous so needs to be in a quiet, adult-only family. Once he knows you he will follow you everywhere. He seems to be pee pad broken. He was surrendered to the shelter when his owner died. He's currently in a foster home with dogs of all sizes and cats and doesn't seem to have an issue with any of the animals. If you would like to meet Poco, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com for an application. Likes: fresh green beans, cultivating his wall of houseplants, a nice bowl of ice water. Dislikes: big cars he has to jump to get into, ear buds with short cords, parrots.

• "Rebel" is a 1-year-old male, black and white, about 40 pounds and unlikely to get bigger. He was surrendered because he lived up to his name and the family could not handle him. Instead of taking a pup to training, he ended up at the shelter. He has been around kids, dogs and cats without issues, according to the owner. Shelter staff checked him and he got along well with other dogs. He needs a playmate. Likes: romping, scampering, sleeping like the dead, unwilling to rise without the promise of snacks or even more playtime. Dislikes: cauliflower, The Man, stepping on a piece of tape and getting it stuck to his foot and not being able to get it off so he has to walk around like his foot has fallen off and he can't find it.

• "Walker" is a male terrier mix, 2. Surrendered by his owner for chasing cattle. Not sure what a 25-pound dog thinks he is going to do with a cow if he catches it, but apparently he has a plan. Likes: making friends with the giant field dogs, grass-fed beef, the blissful ignorance that his giant field dog friends are grass-fed beef. Dislikes: hooves, gates/fences, the taste of grass (the giant field dogs said it was good and they were wrong).

• "Cornelius" is a 2-year-old beagle mix. He was found running down the highway. Likes: reading up on Greek mythology, succulents, owls. Dislikes: pine cones (look like toy, are not; they're lies), trucks that poof out those big clouds of nasty, black diesel smoke (Who are you trying to impress? You're buying groceries and there isn't a speck of dirt on the truck — that's no farm truck), ska music.

• "Lacey" is a 6-year-old female black Lab mix. Adopted from the shelter years ago and returned because her owner is moving. Lacey is overweight and needs some exercise. Likes: carbs, TV musicals, dance parties in the living room. Dislikes: cross fitters who go on and on about it and only it, social media "friends" who only talk to her to invite her to direct sales "parties," polka music.

• "Thunder" is a 4-year-old boxer mix, about 50 pounds. Surrendered because his family could not longer take care of him. Likes: all the "Thor" movies, room for zoomies, pineapple. Dislikes: storms, irony, mushrooms.

• "Remus" is a 2-year-old, male hound mix, heartworm positive. He's one of nine dogs brought to the shelter after their owner fell outside during the cold weather and passed away. Remus likes: chilling (preferably with Cheetos), performing for small audiences on the viola, birdwatching. Dislikes: electric music, apple peels, NASCAR.

• “Rico” is a boxer-hound mix, about 50 pounds. Outgoing personality of a hound and very social. He’s OK with other dogs and his previous owner said he’s been around smaller dogs in the past. Likes: bodies of water (oceans, lakes, ponds, streams, creeks, your glass of water you left out within tongue’s reach), beef jerky, ska bands. Dislikes: sand, canned tuna, people who think “cups” are an instrument.

• “Rosco” is a male Aussie terrier mix, 2-3 years old, about 40 pounds. Loves to play and is good with other dogs. Likes: chewy toys, plushy toys, toys that belong to others. Dislikes: when playtime is over, footie pajamas, overcooked pasta.

• "Alasie" is a young adult, female Huskey mix, about 40 pounds. Doesn't seem to like other dogs. Likes: alone time, all the attention from the humans, those pretzel-cracker hybrids TownHouse makes, preferably with cheese. Dislikes: dips with spinach in them (how dare you try to trick her into eating vegetables), sharing power, TV shows with drama that could have been avoided with basic conversation skills (looking at the drama with Zoe and Kevin, "This is Us." Lookin'. At. You.).

• "Molly" is a female, pit/Brittney spaniel mix, 1-2 years old, about 40 pounds. A woman gave Molly to her mother when she had to move into an apartment. The mother had an older, smaller dog. Molly is young and loves to play and she was afraid her dog might get injured by Molly. Molly is currently in foster care. If you would like an application, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: pouncing, rolling, rolicking. Dislikes: stillness, restriction, those "Live, Laugh, Love" signs (I mean, come on …).

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 5 years old, spayed. Probably best as an only child, needs physical fencing as she chases cars, door darter, but good with kids. Acts like a true border collie; always looking for something to herd. Stalks cats; not sure if she would harm them and it may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be the top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog. If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• "Arturo" is a male pit, 2, about 50 pounds and housebroken. Likes: chilling on the couch watching Food Network ("Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" is his favorite), listening to online radio, those carrot fries he found on Pinterest. Dislikes: soggy carrot fries, when people don't follow the instructions on a recipe and complain it didn't work, patchy internet.

• "Archie" is a 1-2-year-old Walker coonhound mix. Not a typical walker hound — has a nice, soft, thick coat. He has been around kids and dogs without issue. Surrendered for killing a cat. He is mostly housebroken, but does still have an accident occasionally if left too long. Likes: reading the comics in the newspaper, licking things, pancakes. Dislikes: cats, existential dread combined with the unstoppable passage of time, pollen.

• "Jesse" is a male shepherd mix, about 45 pounds, but needs to gain some weight. He was found on 56 East. Likes: a good set of walls and a roof (but with freedom to come and go from them as he pleases), meals he doesn't have to hunt for, birds. Dislikes: buzzers/alarms of any kind, televised sports, being stuck without enough room for a good, vigorous tail-wagging.

Cats

• "Medium" is a young, male cat, about 1 year old. Likes: communing with those who have passed on, banishing poltergeists, watching those underwater-scene screensavers. Dislikes: when a poltergeist sneaks back in (pesky things …), carrots, when the screams of the damned overpower his podcasts and he must descend to tell them to hush.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.

Shelter hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Closed on Sunday, Monday and holidays. Contact Salem Animal Control or the Salem Shelter at 812-883-3673 or Washington County Animal Control at 812-883-5999.
