#FurryFriendFriday pets

Shadi, Anderson, Penny, Selene and Eos are all waiting for you at the shelter!

Dogs

• “Penny,” the female, brindle pit mix, 1-2 years, is very social and happy and weighs about 40 to 45 pounds. Likes: comedic memoirs on audiobook, watching the Travel Channel, shows about ghost hunters. Dislikes: how the History Channel has more shows about aliens than actual history, when her toy gets stuck behind the couch, when she sneezes really hard and her ear goes inside out.

• "Hennie" is a 4-year-old, female hound mix, heartworm negative. She's one of nine dogs brought to the shelter after their owner fell outside during the cold weather and passed away. Some of this person's dogs also died, but nine were rescued. Most of the dogs are missing their front teeth. Staff assume they were trying to escape an enclosure. These dogs have been warm and fed since coming to the shelter and are looking for their forever homes so they'll never need to be cold or hungry again. All are between 25 and 50 pounds. Of the nine dogs, six are heartworm positive and shelter staff are raising funds to treat them. Each treatment will cost a few hundred dollars, but without it, the worms will fill their hearts and cause an early, painful death. The dogs are shy, but social. Most seem to want to be lap dogs. Hennie likes: fine knitted hats, cabaret, cucumber sandwiches. Dislikes: country music, rhinestones, closed doors.

• “Rocky” is a male, boxer mix, about 1 year old, around 50 pounds right now, but needs to fill out a bit more. Likes: Really tough chew bones in red or blue, but not green, apple cores, rolling in blankets until he’s a burrito. Dislikes: caramel sauce (sticky), hip hop music, being picked up off the ground.

• "Bea" is a 4-year-old, female hound mix, heartworm negative. Bea likes: scrolling through pages and pages of counted cross stitch patterns and giggling at the ones with cuss words on them, a nice (decaffeinated) tea, ska music. Dislikes: cacti, roombas, political drama on social media.

• "Ol' Red" is a 3-year-old, male hound mix, heartworm positive. He's one of nine dogs brought to the shelter after their owner fell outside during the cold weather and passed away. Red likes: beef bones, beef steak, a good potato wedge. Dislikes: salad, celery, cooked tomatoes.

• "Rally" is a male beagle, 5-7 years old. He looks pretty sad in his shelter photo because his previous human didn't give him his heartworm preventative and now he has heartworms. "A pill once a month that costs about $5 could have saved him a lot of pain … He had to undergo shots in his back to treat the worms that were growing in his heart," the shelter said. He has been treated and is on the road to recovery. "Rally begs you to give your dogs the monthly preventative so they don't end up needing treatment." He will be available for adoption after a few weeks' recovery from treatment. If you would like an application for Rally, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: napping on those memory foam pillows, bacon, fetching (after he feels better). Dislikes: squirrels in his yard (or visible from the yard/windows, or in his neighbor's yard, or in his friends' yard), when his friends are late to the dog park, robins in general.

• "Willa" is a 2-3-year-old basset mix, about 55 pounds. May be best as an only dog. Likes: hosting magnificent garden parties, sniffing things, rolicking comedies featuring Will Ferrell. Dislikes: cleaning up after magnificent garden parties, when things sniff back, poverty.

• "Camille" is a 2-year-old, female hound mix, heartworm positive. Camille likes: nice walks by quiet water, white river rafting, good bluegrass bands (live music is preferred, but not too close to the stage because it gets too loud). Dislikes: when it gets too loud, gluten-free pizza crust, broccoli.

• “Rod” is a male beagle-border collie mix. Surrendered because he and another dog were being kept outside and the owner did not want them to be outside in the cold any longer and her family situation would not allow her to bring them inside. They are currently warm at the shelter but really need an inside house. He hasn’t missed any meals and weighs about 45 pounds and stands about knee-high. Will chase cats and younger children make him nervous, so he would be best in a home with no children or children older than 10. Likes: comprehensive prison reforms, Rice Krispies treats, a warm living room couch. Dislikes: pickles, water crackers, westerns.

• "Shadi" is a 2-year-old, female, hound mix, underweight at 45 pounds. She was brought in by someone who was concerned with the tumor on her neck. It was full of blood and has been removed. She should make a full recovery. If you would like an application for her, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: that tumor-free lifestyle, Tagalong Girl Scout Cookies, looking out the window. Dislikes: Spongebob Squarepants (the show, the character, all of it), burnt coffee, tapdancers (while they're dancing — the people themselves are fine as long as they pause to give her a pat as they go by).

• "Clarice" is a 2-year-old, female hound mix, heartworm positive. Clarice likes: playing pretend in boxes, going for rides to places that aren't the vet, watching fish in the fish tank. Dislikes: the vet (the vet is nice on a personal level, but they live in a place where you get stuck with needles and they make you get on a scale and she feels strongly she shouldn't have numbers placed on her like that), when fish leap out of the fish tank, spatulas that aren't strong enough to support a decent burger patty.

• "Danger" is a 2-year-old shepherd mix. Named himself because no one believed "Danger" was his middle name, so he decided it would be his first instead. Currently on a campaign to convince people his middle name is "Trouble." He talks a tough game, but he's a sweetie at heart.

• "Caroline" is a 5-year-old, female hound mix, heartworm negative. If you would like an application for her, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Caroline likes: trying to catch bubbles in the air, romping in the snow (as long as there's somewhere warm to go afterward), crackers. Dislikes: fireworks, skunks, porcupine spikes (she just wants to be friends, but they won't explain what she needs to do to make friends with them. She's starting to think they don't want friends, but she likes to think they just need love the most).

• "Romula" is a 2-year-old, female hound mix, heartworm positive. Romula likes: chilling with her brother (and her sisters, but Remus especially), discussing fine art, romping. Dislikes: when the croutons are soggy in her salad, when there's no cream in her doughnuts, turnips.

• "Remus" is a 2-year-old, male hound mix, heartworm positive. He's one of nine dogs brought to the shelter after their owner fell outside during the cold weather and passed away. Each treatment will cost a few hundred dollars, but without it, the worms will fill their hearts and cause an early, painful death. The dogs are shy, but social. Most seem to want to be lap dogs. Remus likes: chilling with his sister (all of them, but Romula in particular), performing for small audiences on the viola, birdwatching. Dislikes: electric music, apple peels, NASCAR.

• "Marshall" is a 2-year-old male terrier mix. Surrendered for being snippy with kids when they would startle him or wake him up. He has never bitten. Needs an adult-only home. Has been on Phenobarbital for seisures. He's a typical bouncy terrier and a total lap dog. Likes: pretty much anything on TV, pretty much anything on the radio, long naps. Dislikes: alarm clocks, surprises, snakes.

• "Tuck" is a 3-year-old, male, bluetick hound. Likes: banjo music (but only the good stuff), growing rainbow chard, eating Cheetos. Dislikes: getting dirt all over his nose, when his ears go inside out, cardboard boxes (boxes made from other materials are fine).

• “Rico” is a boxer-hound mix, about 50 pounds. Outgoing personality of a hound and very social. He’s OK with other dogs and his previous owner said he’s been around smaller dogs in the past. Likes: bodies of water (oceans, lakes, ponds, streams, creeks, your glass of water you left out within tongue’s reach), beef jerky, ska bands. Dislikes: sand, canned tuna, people who think “cups” are an instrument.

• "Jones" is a male Catahoula, 13 months. Likes: "pre-rinsing" the dishes as they're being placed in the dishwasher, long walks by the creek, just dog stuff. Dislikes: people without voicemail boxes set up on their phones, the unrest in Central and South America, pickels.

• "Paige" is a female Catahoula, 13 months. Likes: baked pasta casseroles, extra long phone charging cords, shag carpet. Dislikes: when that little piece of corn chip stabs you in the gums and won't come out, Valentine's Day decorations out before New Year's, slinkies.

• “Rosco” is a male Aussie terrier mix, 2-3 years old, about 40 pounds. Loves to play and is good with other dogs. Likes: chewy toys, plushy toys, toys that belong to others. Dislikes: when playtime is over, footie pajamas, overcooked pasta.

• "Cinnamini," about 40 pounds, came to the shelter with a tie wrap around her neck and dragging a cable, severely emaciated and dehydrated. She has been in foster care for a few weeks now and has recovered. Now she is looking for a home that will give her the love and care she deserves. She is good with dogs (even small yippee ones), cats and kids. She doesn't know how to play with toys but she loves to play with her food bowl - probably the only thing she had to play with until now. Cinnamini wants to play with other dogs but isn't quite sure about that yet either. There is a big goofy pup at her foster home and when he invites her to play she just sits and watches him bounce around and do play bows trying to get her to play. If you can give this girl the home she deserves, please email rockhaven83@gmail.com for an application.

• “Miss Bear” is an Aussie mix, 5 years old, spayed. Probably best as an only child, needs physical fencing as she chases cars, door darter, but good with kids. Acts like a true border collie; always looking for something to herd. Stalks cats; not sure if she would harm them and it may be related to her prey drive. She wants to be the top dog, so she needs to be with an experienced dog owner who knows how to work with her or as an only dog.If you would like an application for adoption, please email dragondog.dc@gmail.com. Likes: freedom, wide-open spaces, catching cars. Dislikes: the conundrum of what to do with a car once she’s caught it, lack of anyone paying attention to her for the slightest moment, the smell of fish.

• “Marble” is a 2-year-old female Lab-pit mix, about 50 pounds. Housebroken. Surrendered because her mom is having some legal trouble. Likes: pancakes, bird statues, Impressionist art. Dislikes: chowder, pollen, phones with cords.

Cats

• "François" is a teenage tiger cat, recent immigrant. Likes: sitting on berets (do not try to make him wear one), hanging out at cafés, ordering vintage bordeaux and batting it off the table to the ground when it arrives. Dislikes: champagne that is not from Champagne, muffins, the English.

• “Patty” is a female cat, black and white. Likes: judging passersby, binge-watching How to Get Away with Murder, batting things off of tables. Dislikes: opera, snobbery, when something is sitting where she wants to be sitting.

• "Perisha" is a 3-year-old female cat, surrendered with Sparta when their owner went to jail, 3-paw declaw, missing one leg. Has been around kids. Likes: rolling on the carpet, Egypt-anything, those mats that look like they're made out of little stones. Dislikes: Sponges (especially when they're wet), metal exam tables at the vet (too slippery), canned fish (prefers freshly grilled, but will accept broiled in a pinch).

• "Anderson" is a male, yellow tiger cat, sweet and friendly. Showed up at someone's house but the owner's dogs did not want to share their home with a cat, even if he was a gentleman. Likes: 24-hour news networks (mainly for drama), getting lost in the moving screensaver on the human's computer, canned salmon. Dislikes: when the human sits back down at the computer and the screensaver goes away, people who think it's silly to leave the TV on for cats when they're gone, his lack of opposable thumbs.

• “Oreo” is a male, black and white cat. Likes: irony, salmon, Twitter. Dislikes: Oreos, tuna, Snapchat.

• "Blaze" is an female orange tiger, 4-5 months Likes: David Attenborough documentaries (specifically about tigers), audiobooks, podcasts. Dislikes: Television, her lack of opposable thumbs, when the humans move their feet under the blankets and trick her into thinking they're rats and she gets a mouthful of blanket and no prey.

• "Selene" and "Eos" are sisters, 4-5 months old. One is brown and stripey and the other is cream-colored. Like: watching the moon, watching the sunrise, watching the stars. Dislike: being tasked with doing anything, when Hollywood tries to do mythology, clouds.

• "Rook" is a male, gray cat. Likes: board games, competing in euchre tournaments, intense chess battles in the park. Dislikes: video games, online gambling, computerized checkers.
