Dogs

• “Mhera” is a 3- or 4-year-old, female shepherd mix who’s not great with young children and has no interest in other dogs, but she does know how to sit and beg and walks well on a leash. Dislikes: goldfinches, artificial sweeteners, people on Facebook who can’t make a post without mentioning the essential oils/dietary supplements/acne creams they sell on the side.

• “Hoss” is a male pit bull, 2 years, who has been waiting at the shelter for several months, wondering why no one seems to want him. He’s fine with other dogs but absolutely not fine with cats. About 60 pounds. Very friendly, loves everyone he meets, and is always up for a ride in the car. He’s very strong and has a lot of playful energy. Dislikes: cats, when someone steals his spot on the couch when he was only going to be up for a minute, getting wet.

• "Rascal" is a 2-year-old beagle. Likes: playing fetch, baying, his floppy, floppy ears. Dislikes: having to repeat himself, advanced mathematics, tomatoes.

• "The Colonel" is a male Lab-Newfoundland mix. Likes: "Bridge Over the River Kwai," reading biographies about General Patton, a nice waffle fry. Dislikes: disorder, goldfinches, spiders.

• "Will" is a hound-Lab-Pyr mix, less than 1 yera old. He was turned in with two others because his owner kept letting them run free. The one who brought them in said they kept running into other people's yards and she was afraid they would get shot. Likes: pineapple, romping, freedom. Dislikes: restrictions, websites aimed at laughing at others (looking at you, PeopleofWalmart.com), the overuse of plastics that end up as floating icebergs of trash in the ocean.

• "Hecate" is a female pit mix, brindle. Came to the shelter full of milk, but the shelter hasn't been able to find her owner or any puppies. Likes: steak, a nice salad, heavy metal music. Dislikes: no easy access to birth control, the rising cost of health insurance, pickles.

• "Diva" is a heartworm-positive, 3-year-old pit bull mix. Rescue only. She hasn't had a great life and was apparently chained up at some point. She had wounds on her leg and foot from a chain being wrapped around her back leg and digging in. She is calm and quiet and good with other dogs. About 30 pounds. Likes: space to wander alone with her thoughts, someone to snuggle with, ice cream (no chocolate, please). Dislikes: chains, her lack of access to responsible heartworm prevention, email scams.

• "Pax" is a male red tick coonhound, about 8 months old. Will not hunt. Sweet boy, with lots of puppy energy. Likes: small and furry animals, tofu, watching decades of ice dancing on YouTube. Dislikes: Slow internet speeds, being underestimated, when he walks around trees and gets sap on his paws.

• "Jep" is 8 months old, male, white and mostly brindle, between 40 and 45 pounds. Loves kids and is great with other dogs. Still a puppy, so has lots of energy and isn't really the couch potato type. Likes: frolicking, chasing crickets, Slinkys.

• "Ryleigh" is a 2-year-old, female mastiff mix, about 65 pounds. Surrendered because her owner moved and couldn't bring her with them. Likes: napping in the sun, particle physics, carbs. Dislikes: French-cut green beans, the TV show ALF, clowns.

• "Dionysus (Denny)" is a 1-year-old Lab mix, tan and white, with a curly tail. Very sweet and gets along well with other dogs. Likes: frivolity, general revelry, rocking out at karaoke night (David Bowie is his specialty). Dislikes: uptight people, the idea of pickle snowcones, the practice of pickle snowcones.

• "Yukon" is a male, husky. Likes: snow, getting what he wants, doing what he wants. Dislikes: the idea of "no" and all associated words, getting up early, mushrooms.

• "Maverick" is a beagle mix, 2, about 40 pounds. Good with kids and cats. If you'd like an application for him, email rockhaven83@gmail.com. Likes: apple-scented Bath and Body Works lotion, Enya, stolen bites of steak. Dislikes: the notion that masculinity is only portrayed as hardness, loud noises, when you buy "fresh baked" bakery bread and bring it home only to find its already stale.

Cats

• "Wynifred (Wynn)" is a torti with big, pale eyes. Very social. Likes: guard duty through the window, listening to audiobooks, blogging. Dislikes: Twitter, socks, loud and sudden noises.

• "Schnooks" is an adult gray tiger cat. Likes: drinking water drip by drip from their paws, staring at ghosts, French bread. Dislikes: ghosts, dust mites, fish sticks.

• "Morpheus," "Phoebe" and "Phantasos," are tiger cat siblings (male, female, male), about a year old. Like: Greek food, sleeping, magic. Dislike: nightmares, horror movies, the Clash/Wrath of the Titans movies.

Adoption fees include rabies shot and normal cost of spay and neuter. Adoption cost for dogs is $80 and $50 for cats. The return-to-owner fee is $10, plus a $2 per-day board fee and proof of rabies shot or another $10.

Shelter hours are Monday through Friday, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Closed on Sunday and holidays. Contact Salem Animal Control or the Salem Shelter at 812-883-3673 or Washington County Animal Control at 812-883-5999.
