Flurry of last-minute filings

Filing in the Salem City Municipal Election was very slow – until the very last minute.

Friday at noon was the deadline and the clerk's office was kept busy with several people filing for mayor and council races.

There are four people seeking the Republican Party's nomination for mayor of Salem: Justin Green, Ron Haendiges, Robert “Bobby” Fletcher and Christie Luckett.

Two Democrats will vie for their party’s nomination; William “Bill” Ackerman and Richard Bobby Longworth.

There are races on both side of the ticket for the city council at-large seat. Democrats R.H. Bennett and Mark W. Hobson want the compete for the seat. There are two Republicans seeking the seat as well, Jody Smedley and Janine Lee.
The at-large seat is currently held by Green.

The other contested race pits Rick Stewart against Democratic incumbent Warren “Truck” Jones for the District 2 city council seat. There is no primary race on the Republican side.
