Early voting underway

Stephanie Rockey is ready to assist voters who wish to cast their ballots in the primary election early.

The first person to cast a ballot in the 2018 primary election had a very short trip to do so. Circuit Judge Larry Medlock simply walked across the hall to the county clerk’s office on Tuesday, April 10, the day voters could first cast ballots.

Medlock’s court moved, along with the clerk’s office, to the new Justice Center last fall. The clerk’s office has been busy since voting opened, said Clerk Sarah Milligan.

“We had 14 come in the first day,” she said. Traffic has been steady since.

Milligan said even though voting tends to be down when it’s not a presidential election, there are local races generating interest. “The sheriff’s race,” she noted, “everybody’s interested in that every time.” She also said the township offices resulted in several races this cycle, something not typically seen.

Those who wish to participate in early voting may stop by the clerk’s office (in the new Justice Center on Jackson Street) Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

Voters must enter through the main entrance of the Justice Center; not the side entrance marked “Voter’s Service Office.”

The Voter’s Service Office will be open two Saturdays – April 28 and May 5 – 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. for early voting.

Early voting ends at noon Monday, May 7.

Be sure to bring a government-issued ID with you to vote. For questions, please call 812.883.5748.
