Volunteers at the Washington County Food Bank gratefully received a $1,500 grant from Duke Energy Monday morning.

“We really appreciate being able to stand behind an organization that helps the community like this,” said Duke’s Bruce Calloway during a tour of the food bank after presenting the check. “It’s humbling.”

Food bank board member and three-year volunteer Janice Briner was on hand to accept the grant and thanked Duke and Calloway for their generosity. She said the food bank serves around 700 families each month, along with many veterans and elderly citizens. The food bank has around 50 volunteers coming in, some more often than others.

“There’s always a need for volunteers,” said Briner.

Briner said the food bank receives donations from a variety of community sources, but there are some items the food bank can always use — peanut butter, cereal, macaroni and cheese, crackers, corn bread mix, canned green beans and corn, pork’n’beans, rice, pasta, tuna and milk (preferably in jugs, but the food bank won’t turn away powdered milk).
